The End

This is the end, beautiful friend
This is the end, my only friend, the end
It hurts to set you free
But you’ll never follow me
The end of laughter and soft lies
The end of night we tried to die
This is the end

United we stand and divided we fall. Thus ends the final days of the Emerald Project.

Approximately 10 days ago I and a number of devs came together to reform the Emerald Team in the anxious hope of continuing the most popular TPV in Second Life. The incredible driving passion, flair for innovation, endless energy and camaraderie were all still there. Because of this, I was sure we could make this work.

Alas this was not  to be. Linden Lab has made demands of the team that are impossible to meet. Among the demands not listed publicly elsewhere was to publicly release an RC without any ability to load the emkdu or llkdu files. This was do-able. The final demand was to ‘delete’ 3 key members of our team. While making this demand, Linden Lab was quite aware that this was effectively the guillotine to the project.

This is the opportunity for a fork project to develop and create a TPV version of snowstorm, which is what Linden Lab really wants. I am aware of a number of small projects underway now, and I wish them the best, the very best in their endeavors.

For you, the user, what this  means is that there will not be any further releases of the Emerald Viewer after today. The existing releases will continue to operate until Linden Lab decides to terminate their access and end Emerald once and for all.

There will be one final version of the Emerald Viewer released here later today; that is, the viewer we’ve been working on for the past six months. It would be a shame to let the efforts of the developers who put so many unpaid hours into this project go to waste.

Edit: The final version has been released, you can get it at http://emeraldviewer.net/downloads.shtml

This virtual world is ever changing and must be, otherwise it will stagnate. This incredible environment will continue.

CLARIFICATIONS

- Because there was no consensus amongst the developers about whether or not to comply with Linden Lab’s requirement to remove three core developers, Lonely Bluebird offered to leave the Emerald project only if the team voted for this. Rather than wait for any kind of vote, a hostile takeover was attempted by a portion of the Dev Team trying to gain unauthorized access to the emerald servers without knowledge of the others (including me, the server owner).

- the vote eventually took place, with a minority even voting. This few that voted did not all vote in favour of removing Lonely Bluebird. The vote took place after the takeover failed, for forms sake

- Linden Lab has made it abundantly clear and in fact stated quite bluntly that they want Emerald numbers, which at this point in time number around 50% of total Second Life logins. These have been the stats for some months now.

- The primary issue that resulted in the demise of Emerald was the attempted and failed takeover of the project, far in advance of any requirements deadline set by Lindenlab. This hostile takeover was initiated by Jessica Lyon.

***UPDATE***

As at 2.00pm SLT today, an attempt was made to pervert the in world open Emerald viewer group by a known griefer using the account Greenlife Emerald. As a consequence of this, I tried to close the group down. Unfortunately, I could not do this in time, so many will now no doubt read disturbing notices put out by Greenlife Emerald. I suggest you read this blog for any information on Emerald.

Please note, no other group has the legal right to use the name Emerald or Emerald Viewer.

  1. Why does my mind want to connect “Linden Labs” and “jealousy” so badly ?

    Thanks for all, anyway. Really.

    • yes well. i think deep down we all new LLabs would kill emerald they just dont like anything better than their own, we all Knew it realy didnt we this day would happen? of course we did, are we surprised? of course we are not.did anyone actualy think that the way they forced, there pitifull sl viewer v2, on us, that they did not intend stitching up other viewers?.hell no.
ALL YOU OTHER VIEWERS OUT THERE BEWARE. this is a majar war on a far superior viewer that they have started and won , because they dont want anything better than their inferior Viewer, and now they will stage a war on other viewers because if they won against something as big and fantastic as emerald they certainly will be able to with others, thank you Emerald team for such a briliant vewer and your hard work to make it Emerald best viewers ever, your dedication and perseverance with the pathetic small minded peoples at LLabs to make sl a world for the residents and not just LLabs own fat purses and banks, should be commended highly, well done emerald team, thanks for a wonderfull time with Emerald, you guys are the best.

      • you’re an idoit

      • I am quite confused by this. It seems Linden Labs likes to alienate their customer base. The number of log-ins on the down swing as SL competes for the leisure time of its patrons. Any other business would be jumping for joy to have so much work taken off it’s hands by unpaid volunteers. I would be kissing the toes of anyone that has helped my business so much for no compensation whatsoever. The idea that they would do this, from a business perspective to me seems absolutely insane.

Well, I will continue to log in with only emerald. When emerald is pulled then I will decide if SL is worthy of my precious RL time AND real money. I highly doubt I will ever log in again, once they dis-allow Emerald.

I do not ask why linden labs loses money, I ask why not.

      • I’m so sorry. Thank you to all who have worked so hard and lately taken so much abuse, all for your terrible sin of providing Second Lifers with the best viewer there is. We appreciate you and we know that even now your efforts will not be in vain. Others will take up the banner, one after another. Sorry, LL, you may have won this battle, but you aren’t even a player in the war.

      • An idiot? A complete and utter twat I’d say….Did you manage to get àny of the uproar of the past half year or so through your hippo skull? This “brilliant superior viewer” was wrought from the minds of criminal hackers who utilized sophisticated spyware to scrape private data of random (?) avatars who were tracked and hung out to dry on certain hacker/filesharing sites, IP ‘n all. Attempts were made to down SL completely via the Emerald log in screen. Residents with a critical eye were group griefed on their own sim by Emerald posse….”Your dedication and perseverence with the pathetic small minded people at LLabs”….? Was your name published on the internet, linked to your IP ma’am? I didn’t think so. This sordid bunch of lowlife is finally being put down and it’s what I would call, a nice, healthy clean up. And yes, other TPV’s better take heed, ‘cos there are still viewers out there not fully on the up-and-up, some of them directly originating from the Emerald slime bucket, that need to be exposed for what they really are. Pathetic and small minded are you, ma’am, if you can’t see beyond your bag of nice li’l viewer features and your comfortable double-click TP to appreciate what lies underneath and more explicitly: what happened to others. Emerald’s “fuck you” mentality in optima forma. Bravo! The fact that before posting this, I stopped and wondered whether this was a wise thing to do is a crying shame in itself.

    • Thank you to all those connected with Emerald who have behaved in good faith and with integrity.Thank you for the time and effort you have invested in improving the experience of those who benefitted without having contributed.Thank you for being generous to invest countless hours in this project for the benefit of its users.

    • Yea Linden Lab seems really to be childish full of jealousy and hate. :(

    • *sobs loudly and hugs each member of the dev team one by one then all together for a group hug* “I want so bad for this all to be a very late april fool’s joke! thank you Emerald team for all you have done for us. please revamp somehow and come back to us. you are sooooo incredible and incredibly talented! this girl loves you all and misses you already”

    • Sounds like they fell apart in the end. Not ALL LL’s fault there. The team imploded under pressure. sux cause Emeralsd is a faily good viewer even with all the added spy-ware I hate. *sighs and googles TPV’s*

    • how about instead of all of us complaining and crying about it, lets all sign a partition to keep emerald going?

      • I quit as a premium member when LL shafted us with the V 2.0 viewer which was not liked from the testing stages. I used Emerald for ages and am saddened by it’s demise. Perhaps LL could hire the Emerald developers and give us all a viewer we can use!! I hope they get paid better than the current LL developers, too.

      • I am all for that. I will sign a Partition to keep emarald. After all it is the best Viewer out there.

    • I BELIEVE THERE NEEDS TO BE A RESISTANCE, WE AS CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE A STAND AGAINST THE PEOPLE AT SECONDLIFE AND LINDEN LABS, AND LET THEM KNOW THEY ARE NOT GODS, THEY ARE NOT THE LAW, AND WITHOUT US THE PEOPLE SECONDLIFE WOULD SEISE TO EXSIST……VIVA LA RESISTANCE, EMERALD BEING DONE AWAY WITH ISNT THE FIRST TIME LL HAS BEEN UNFAIR, WHEN ARE WE GOING TO STAND UP AND SHOUT…..NO MORE LINDEN LABS!!!!I SAY WE PICK ONE DAY AND NOBODY LOG IN AT ALL AND LET LL SEE THE CONTROL NOTHING…..SO IF YOUR WITH ME SPREAD THE WORD……DO NOT LOG IN TO SECONDLIFE ON MONDAY SEPTEMBER 6TH,2010, AND LET LL FEEL JUST HOW POWERFUL THEY ARE NOT

    • I am sick…I love Emerald.
I will no longer be a paying SL resident. If they continue to take away the things we love, why give them my money.

    • *does the yippee skippee dance* it’s saturday and I’m logged in with emerald! LL read these posts and said aw hells, we ticked off a LOT of people, lets rethink this. and here it is!
oooohhh I hope it stays and the dev team comes back! love you dev team!

    • They should be jealous! The new 2600 is absolutely fabulous I am temporarily running on 512 and wow the new version is lightening speed for this dinosaur! YOU guys I am so pleased I stuck it out waiting for whatever you had to offer…Your future now will kick butt to anything Linden has! Loyal fan and keep up the great work!

  2. You gave up…..when you promised us you wouldn’t. :o(

    • The Emerald team had no choice. Linden Labs put such ridiculous and stupid demands and requirements on Emerald :( This was just a big witch hunt from LL to get rid of Emerald. I am sure LL put those impossible demands on Emerald knowing long ago that they would fail. Sad day for Second Life :(

      • Actually they did have a choice. The remaining devs that LL approved could have just started a fork of their own without the emerald name; a new project. Why they didn’t, and just NOT include the three LL wanted gone, I don’t know. But this is a very sad day for the users of Emerald for sure.

      • As drake notes below, they dev’s do have a choice, and I am hopeful a new team will arise wiser and stronger having learned some hard lessons. These folks put their everything into this and I hope they dont give up.

      • As a note to Drake, if you work in a group in such good cooperation and then an outside source tries to dismantle itm], you just don’t want to work without each other. It is something I can imagine and understand.
But it is a bad and sad day for all the Emerald users. As LL’s viewer 2.0, of which many already commented, sucks bigtime ^^
And I do hope this team will come back in some way or an other.

  3. :-(
A very sad day for us the user.
    Thank you for your efforts.
You tried that is the main thing, thank you.
    Love
    June

  4. please dont give up, i really cant run anything other than emerald and text viewers.

apparently all the effort you guys put into emerald was in vain, and your going to let the 2.0 fanboys win? thought emerald was tougher than this

  5. A sad day indeed. Perhaps one day all the real truths and motivations of all involved will see the light of day. My greatest hope is that there is a Phoenix somewhere on the horizon marking the rebirth of Emerald. My thanks and congratulations to everyone on the Emerald team, you will be missed.

  6. And the messy corporation that is Linden Labs strikes. I am so mad, I can hardly find the words to type.

When will this end? When all we have is the viewer 2 they shoved down our throats? They’ve taken out Emerald, what’s to stop them from taking out the rest of the 3rd party viewers?

    • I am sure LL will find fault with every other viewer until their SL2 viewer is the only one left standing. :(

There has to be some way us SL citizens can boycott Linden Labs…maybe through Facebook? ;P

  7. I still want to see a verbatim requirement list from LL. You should have posted it by now as should have LL.

  8. Well, thanks the idiot who managed to kill the reputation with his headless actions.. lol
Good job removing the only workign alternative to the Viewer 2.. Kudos

  9. There are other approved TPV’s available including at least based on Viewer 1.**. With Enmerald’s demise I am sure Arabella won’t mind it being posted here as something for the Emerald user-base to think about for the future.

    http://viewerdirectory.secondlife.com/

    • I would not doubt if LL is already trying to find fault with all other TPV’s and will find ways for us to not use them. They are forcing us to use the crappy SL2 viewer.

  10. This is a great loss to all of us who play and work in SL. I am going to cancel my premium account today in protest. Not that this will affect the coffers of LL. But it will make me feel better. Thank you all for you hard work and dedication. You will be greatly missed.

    • Actually, it *will* affect the coffers of SL. It might be a small amount relative to those coffers, but that’s how they add up. If 50% of SL logins were through Emerald, and all of those Emerald users quit paying, you can be sure they’ll feel it. :)

  11. NOOOOOOOOOO nnoooooooNOOOOOO dont give up its the only viewer that even makes the sl experience bareable all other viewers have short commings that makes them unuseble

  12. Thanks for trying and doing the best you can. I will stick to Emerald as long as Linden lets me use it.

  13. Im so done with SL now,I flat out refure to use viewer 2.

  14. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO …. :°(

  15. Couldn’t we all hit the bad guy very hard with a pointed stick, then ?
I know, this may sound like nonsense, but somehow, it fits in all that mess, i believe.

  16. I’ve tried other viewers, but Emerald is the one I always come back to and this is a very sad announcement. I will be the “last man standing”. Emerald has too many features that I personally find incredibly useful. I hope the development team will somehow still be able to overcome this and become strong again. Its appalling how, as is often the case, the minority have spoiled it for the majority.

  17. Do we laugh or do we cry? Do we continue or do we lay down and die?

  18. Oh no! No! No!

Nothing comes close to Emerald in terms of functionality and ease of use. I tried Imprudence, but came running straight back to Emerald.

I’ve had a cr*p day and this has just put the final finish on it.

    • I just want to add that you guys rock, and thanks for trying.

Someone mentioned LL’s jealousy, and I think that’s right on the money: what you guys produced was head and shoulders above the official viewer. What a pity they didn’t hire you all instead of outsourcing to the Ukraine for their dire Viewer 2.

      • My sentiments also. Emerald is by far and away the best viewer! v2.0 is dreadful! I’ve used Emerald ever since I found it until today when I tried a couple of others. No comparison. Emerald wins hands down. I’ll stick with Emerald as long as I’m allowed to do so.

  19. This is not a goodbye i am sure, so i will just say farewell. old soldiers never die … , loved what you guys did, hope to meet again along the way…

  20. nothing beats emerald i;ve tried a few but emerald still has my votes on it all the features u have on it are great like advance ,i have not yet seen another viewer with that or the beams, need i go on .
im still going to use emerald as long as i can

    • Kirstens one, after first emerald trouble, had implemented a lot of features, i think in few time it can be a valid alternative to’ LL viewers

  21. great, just fucking great, Now what are we supposed to use that ISNT LL viewer 2?

  22. Imprudence isn’t bad actually but its radar sucks.

And it doesn’t help with the urge to kick Lonely’s face with dead hedgehogs.

  23. I’ve *all* viewers installed, emerald have great features… I cannot judge team decisions, only hoping all other developers will join other viewers projects without giveup completely…

  24. Thank you all for you efforts to create viewer that was user driven in terms of its marvelous features. For years, LL turned a blind ear (mixing my metaphors) to user requests for enhanced features. Modular stepped in and developed emerald. People voted with their feet (fingers?) to the extent that New Worls Notes estimated that 50% of the users were now accessing SL via emerald. How embaressing for LL, which recently invested so much resource into their new Edsel viewer.

Thank you so much for your efforts.

    des/de/mona

    • Desdemona enfield, of all the posts that said things yours is closest to what I think is the truth. We citizens voted with our feet and went to Emerald. LL spent time on Viewer 2 and found that it is not nearly as popular. For whatever reasons, LL has a different view then the large minority, if not a small majority of citizens in the world.

I do not know if Emprudence will improve the radar that, as the one major feature I most enjoyed about Emerald.

I think it is premature to close the modular team down. This is my opinion however. It is a shame that as I believe, LL did not want made public, the demands of who you were supposed to remove from the team.

  25. The BEST VIEWER I have ever tried on SecondLife and LL ist throwing the bomb on it …. wow – it is THE BEST !!

  26. OMG this is indeed a sad day for SL. Linden Labs is such as sore loser!!! They knew that Emerald was the best and most popular TPV on SL and they didnt like that so they went on a witch hunt and put very unreasonable demands on Emerald. That is so unfair and wrong!

If anyone from LL reads this…
I REFUSE TO USE YOUR STUPID SL2 VIEWER!!! I WILL QUIT SL IF I AM FORCED TO JUST USE THAT VIEWER. I WILL FIND ANOTHER TPV OTHER THAN SL2, NOT ONLY BECAUSE SL2 SUCKS BUT OUT OF PRINCIPLE NOW. SECOND LIFE AND EMERALD VIEWER WAS LIKE THE PERFECT MARRIAGE. THEY WORKED VERY WELL TOGETHER. WOW LINDEN LABS.. YOU REALLY DID IT THIS TIME. I HAVE LOST A TON OF RESPECT FOR LINDEN LABS AND THIS ACTION TO SHUT DOWN EMERALD HAS DRAWN ME EVEN CLOSER TO SAY GOODBYE TO SECOND LIFE AND FIND ANOTHER ONLINE WORLD.

Linden Labs really blew it this time. I just hope that if another TPV becomes as user friendly and popular as Emerald that LL doesnt put stupid ridiculous demands and requirements on them as well. It all boils down to jealousy. Instead of Linden Labs embracing the Emerald Project and helping them, they tried every which way to get them removed. So petty!!!

I hope Jessica and the Emerald team come up with another viewer like Emerald. I’ll be one of the first ones to try it and use it in SL.

  27. Oh my, what a terrible day this is,I can’t believe this has happened I will use emerald until i can’t loggin with it and then my Avatar might die.
Thank you team for trying to save emerald, you guys and gals are the tops.

  28. http://code.google.com/p/emergence-viewer/

  29. Was sort of obvious LL would keep pressing with more outrageous demands each time you fulfilled a previous one. That started happening the day Emerald hooked into the approved TPV program.

Now is the time for the Emerald team to step up and make the source code for the ENTIRE Emerald project, including the newest iteration of the viewer publicly available so that other developers may take up the ball. (LGG and Challice spring to mind)

It would be a shame to lose code which actually beats the snot out of anything LL has come up with so far.

Would LOVE to know whom LL hates enough to want off the Emerald team though.

  30. I ask that you please reconsider your decision. We love and need Emerald badly. Do not forsake us now. We have been loyal to you, now be loyal to us.

  31. Way to go Linden Labs! You just shot yourself in the foot with this stupid move to remove Emerald. The Emerald viewer was by far the best TPV EVER. I am not the type of person to wish anything bad on anyone, but…I think I will make an exception this time. I hope LL suffer financially because of this move. I hope many members leave SL and flock to other online worlds.

The word JEALOUSY comes to mind here. LL should be ashamed of themselves and I really hope they suffer from this move. DICTATORSHIP also comes to mind here. Seems LL is trying to dictate what viewers can be used on Second Life as long as it is their own viewer and noone elses.

A HUGE thumbs down to Linden Labs.

  32. Look at it this way.. keep making Emerald. We don’t give a good damn if it is on LL TPV approved list or not. Screw them.

  33. Why do you HAVE to adhere to Lindens requests? Just to get on some list? Keep doing what you’re doing and word of mouth will keep you going regardless of what LL wants

  34. Can anyone (preferably with a law degree ) find an antitrust or unfair bussness practices complaint in this?

  35. Can anyone (preferably with a law degree) find an antitrust or at least an unfair bussness practices case here?

    • no, unfortunately. what LL did was perfectly legal, mores the pity.

LL owns it all, thus they get to dictate what vehicles are used to access what amounts to their intellectual and physical properties.

sucks though, because their viewer is a cumbersome dog. dont any of them actually *use* SL?

ps. i will leave before i use that viewer, and take my money elsewhere….and hopefully find someone that actually *listens* to their users and doesnt make their lives harder.

  36. It’s truly sad when they should have hired the Emerald and gotten rid of the one they have, but it would mean that LL hired the wrong people and they cannot control everything, Emerald is the only viewer I can run on my pc and my husbands pc and I have a High end Graphic card, What wer those idiots thinking, and I say Idiots, Emerald is the Best. I just wish it didn’t have to be like this.

  37. Why is it always that when I manage to find something I am happy with it gets taken away. It has taken me three years to find a viewer that allows me to enjoy SL only to have it taken from me so soon. I am starting to think why do I bother.

  38. [...] day, so my reaction is probably disproportionate, but I’m crying. Here is the link to the Modular Systems Blog entry, but jut in case the blog disappears, here is the post in its sad entirety: The [...]

  39. Really speechless! I do not know why this doggedness of LL about Emerald, but I fear it’s just envy and jealousy! Emerald is light years ahead in simplicity, flexibility, accuracy and ease of use than SL viewer2. I hope so much that LL will change its mind again and will finish this that seems a very unfair way to do and will give back to Emerald the opportunity to continue working for the good of all its users and of the same SL … I dare not think whom will remain, of Emerald users, in SL if LL will compel its users to use Sl viewer2…
Please advise all of us, supporters of Emerald, in case you will decide to collect signatures of protest to sensitize the LindenLab.
However I am very grateful to the whole Emerald team for what it has done so far and I will aspect to download the latest version of its viewer with the sincere hope of being able to use again in Sl the next update and … the next update yet, and …. the next update yet … and so on till the end … Thanks for everything and Good luck to all!!!!!

  40. Fight fire with fire make your own SL community…im sure ill have a third life with you.

  41. To bad,Emerald viewer is a far better viewer than SL viewer and easer to play with.

  42. [...] looks like Linden Lab made some demands on the Emerald development team that didn’t make it into the public domain before now. Now, I made a promise to everyone to [...]

  43. This is a very sad day for me.
LL is getting more irritating by the day!
I hope many leave SL because your your foolish actions.

  44. I am also fed up with LL now. Have canceled my premium account and I’m already moving my simulators to OSgrid.

  45. I think the bitterest pill Ive had to swallow out of all this was the fat I was lied to. The whole grid was. LL weren’t working with Emerald devs at all, they invited the grid to leave Emerald for other clients and flat out told some of the devs to get out of the mix. For Phillip Linden to put his name to the claim just says to me that there is no-one in the LL team with the authority to redress this breach of trust.

  46. I have used Emerald since my second week in S/L, and a year later have no idea how I will make a switch to another viewer. I believed you all when you said you would correct this, I believe you when you said Emerald and the people behind it, understood that we need and want Emerald. I feel like you walked away without a fight, why are you not just telling us about the new name for the viewer we all love? I mean are you really going to turn your backs on all of us, or are you going to move forward?

Remember we want Emerald, and that means we want you!

  47. [...] Sep Today, Emerald developers have announced that the popular TPV will be gone! Linden Lab has given the Emerald team certain requirements that were found to be too much, so the [...]

  48. I would be interested how the split goes to other viewers. I don’t think LL is going to pick up nearly as many people as they think to their viewer

  49. How pathetic LL can’t share for the good of their customers. It is truly a sad day when a company as successful as LL is so greedy that they make decisions based on childish jealousy. Emerald simply gave their customers what they couldn’t manage to do…a decent viewer!

  50. LL is a JEALOUS thing because Emerald ALWAYS was the best viewer , i think 50% of ppl in sl was using . Why they have to tell me which viewer to use ? Because sl is LL’s playground and they does what they want ? No no we pay for it so we have rights too . They should ask for ewverybody what they want BEFORE blocked Emerald . Hmmm doens SL is not a democracy ? Mayu LL think are Gods , but im here to have fun and use whatever i want to login in sl . They are not ashamed because they dont know what this word means .
They paid alof for that crap called V2 and ppl hate that . I hate too . But LL forget , without US , they have nothing !!!!! We make sl , or they will stand alone at their suck digital world .

  51. Damn it all, I LIKE emerald viewer, damn the stupidity of some people who stick their dirty little fingers into every good thing they find, they ruin things for the rest of us. I’m sorry Emerald staff, you did a wonderful job, this is a dreadful way for Linden Labs to repay you.

  52. I will continue to run Emerald until it no longer works, then use a different viewer other than the LL crap viewer. If all else fails, I’ll use an Open Grid viewer. I’m not giving them (LL) the satisfaction of thinking that they have a hope in hell of winning playing the game they way they are doing now. Philip Linden reminds me of a saying about doctors; “How are doctors & God different? God doesn’t believe he’s a doctor…”.

  53. I want to thank you with the fullness of my heart, for all of the time, dedication, and effort you’ve put into making my experience the most sensational, convenient, and all-around user-friendly it could be. You have superceded any expectations I could have ever had. I’ve never cared for any of the controversy surrounding the project, because I think that the team has risen above it, behaving in a sophisticated manner, and working to deliver an amazing product, for little accolades on their part. I don’t know what I’ll do without Emerald. I’ve tried, experimentally, and failed, to do without it. I’ve come to loathe my Second Life experience without you, for a multitude of subtle reasons that you likely understand better than I do. You will be missed, bitterly. Best of wishes. – Starr

  54. Piping Farewell 2Emerald

  55. Emerald down, now next ont he TPV list, as i see LL will keep hunting every TPV that gains popularity then ban-chase them to steal that hard worked users into their pockets.

Thanks for all the moments Emerald gave me, this was the most reliable viewer (and the one i could understand) from them all.

  56. As an SL photographer and builder, I find this news extremely disheartening. With Emerald I finally had the right tools . . . and it works so much better on my Mac computer too! I realized that Emerald has that quality that Philip Linden always aspired to bring to Second Life . . . it inspires delight! All the thoughtful little details, and the ease of use, the elegance of the display . . . Linden Labs would do well to embrace Emerald and make it the standard. The alternative will drive users away, even diehards like me.

    • Here Here! I agree 100%. I to am a photographer and videographer. Emerald was exactly what I needed. I am extremely disappointed. LL needs to do just that adopted Emerald as it’s main viewer/

  57. Linden Lap wins?
    This is a Bad day…..

  58. This is what I want to know.straight up from Arabella Steadham ‘s mouth
** no fluff or kissy ass nadda
    NO PC
Unless 1 LL has her gagged , or at some point she wants to walk across the bridge to LL again.
Who in LL made the final demand of the removal of the three to be deleted and what they (LL) Based that Demand on

  59. Please please pleeeeeeease don’t give up… I know that’s easy for me to say being one of the many users that has no idea about codes and programming and tech stuff and things, but when l look around me inworld, the tags I see above peoples heads speak in volumes. If I had to guess I would say 75 percent of the people I know are Emerald devotees, and that is purely and simply because it is a superior viewer. Period. Nothing else compares, and believe me I had tried them all. Eeeeek. Emerald wins hands down every time. This news makes me very sad indeed, and more to the point, quite mad with Linden Labs for their obvious attempts at the sabbotage of this project. If it is the end… then I would like to thank, with all my heart, the Emerald team for bringing a quality viewer to SL, and ultimately improving the quality and ease of my overall experience.
Sighs. I just can’t believe this is happening.
Great work guys, I am so sorry that you have been pushed to this decision. It totally sucks ass.

  60. This is a very sad day for Second Life users. Viewer 2 is the worlds biggest white elephant, but (nix metaphor alert) is still desperate to flog that dead horse. Emerald is the first victim of Linden Labs stupidity. Makes you wonder who will be next.

  61. I understand that many in SL are not premium accounts and that to Linden Labs this is a business. However they seem to have forgotten that the customer is ALWAYS right !! With 50% or more of the people using Emerald, one would think they would try to bring the Emerald team into the Linden Labs family instead of chasing them off. This is truly a shame that King Linden Labs has slayed another valiant knight who was attempting to only make the world a better and more enjoyable place.

    Long live Emerald !!!!

  62. And yet, the quote when you log in says,

“There will come a time when you believe everything is finished. That will be the beginning.”

    Cryptic? I hope so.

If not, I want to thank all the good people who tried to keep it going. I am hopeful you will be able to take the ashes away from those who did Emerald harm, and make something wonderful. There is nothing keeping the good guys from making something everyone loves.

All I can do is hope and encourage.

  63. I think LL should hire you to design their viewers cause their viewers suck big time. I’m sure that’s going to be some kind of protests around SecondLife.
It’s stupid, Emerald was the best viewer ever.
    That stupid jealously…
I hope you will come back one day….

Thank you for everything and I’m sure you have most of the users’ support!

  64. I would rather be sodomized on public television by a syphilitic wildebeest than use viewer 2. It’s a clunky piece of rancid slug feces, and should wiped from the face of the multiverse. Emerald is a goddess among tpvs, and I worship Her code daily.

  65. Boycott LL till they get there shit together.

  66. Any plans to expand this to Mac?

  67. Great.. If there’s no emerald, I won’t be able to work. I can work with any other viewer. Like.. seriously.. Why should I even stay in Second Life? I’m so not renewing my prime membership this year!

  68. it saddens me to see linden labs want to remove emerald…

emerald was the only viewer i ever preferred to use since it ran the smoothest, and gave more tools than the official viewers ever did.

without emerald i probably will never use SL again…

  69. Not sure i can keep playing SL if they’re going to make me use their viewer .. i absolutely HATE it with a passion … this is horrible news :/

  70. Thank you guys. You made the best SL viewer ever, and you’ve made my SL so much better and easier. It was a great time.

  71. You know, its really sad in a world where technology reigns, and creativity thrives, that large companies need the be such tyrants. 10L that LL will try and recruit these people, the developers of Emerald to their team, and I am divided on whether I want them to join, so the V2 doesn’t SUCK anymore..or if they join forces and and say kiss mine and make another viewer.

  72. Thank you for all the good times. I hope to see you all soon in a different form. i’ll still use anything but the V2 viewer from LL. it’s just bad

  73. Simply put.

I have put years of my time and hundreds of my dollars into SL because I enjoyed it and liked how it worked. Emerald was a great development for SL, and Viewer 2.0 was a confusing, overly complicated mess.

If SL doesn’t gain a viewer of compatible quality to Emerald, or if LL tries to force me to use that living abortion that they call Viewer 2.0, I’m going to be online even less than before. I might even delete my account.

    EXTREMELY bad form, Linden Labs.

  74. Raise your glass to the hard working people
Let’s drink to the uncounted heads
Let’s think of the wavering millions
Who need leading but get gamblers instead

Lets all remember this and at some point we will hold LL accountable – be it in the marketplace, on the grid, or in our hearts.

    Punky Pugilist

    • LL is not to blame for this. Most of the ‘requirements’ are just the third party policy that Emerald willingly agreed to follow months ago. Some of the requirements are due to the GPL license that Emerald must follow in order to use the open source viewer code that LL has generously made available.

LL didn’t have to share their code at all, but they did and specified a few, liberal conditions. Most of the viewer development community works with these just fine. It was Emerald who most disregarded the licensing conditions, and repeatedly violated policy in ways that harmed their users and LL’s users.

LL isn’t the bad guy here. They set out the rules at the beginning, and most developers followed them. Emerald broke them and has to face the consequences of its actions.

LL didn’t have to give Emerald a chance at getting back in the TPV list at all after the all the problems. But they did, and it’s clear that not all members of this team were ready to take responsibility for their own actions.

      • Oh, really? Could you please point to the part in the TPVP that allows Linden Labs to have veto power over any TPV’s staff?

      • Gaea’s response is very true. . . They truly get the point here.

      • Sure Gaena, that’s the easiest one.

        TPV Policy 6.a.iii
        “#
        # Your Second Life accounts must be in good standing, must not be suspended, and must not have been permanently banned or terminated;”

Research the three developers in question and it will be obvious.

LL might have let this slide before Emerald got caught doing multiple unethical things. Now they are insisting on strict compliance, for good reason.

      • right or wrong, LL has pissed off a lot – make that A LOT – of users. they are the customers. the old adage that the customer is always right will end up biting LL in the backside eventually. they consistently seem to ignore the pleas of their users and people will slowly but surely get annoyed enough to go away and they will have killed the golden goose with their greed.

      • this isnt some tit for tat your not playing by the rules…this is a power struggle plain and simple. Emerald users represent the seasoned players, the ones that know enough to look for a TPV, the ones that spend the most time and money in SL. the ones with enough connections in SL to have spread the word about Emerald. having this very important demographic dedicated to Emerald is a threat. Emerald pushed the envelope, raised the bar and has sway over 50% of LL’s customers. tbo, i dont think most Emerald users would care about any of this if viewer 2.0 was remotely familiar. that imo is where LL failed, instead of trying to win over Emeralds share of users by creating something easy to transistion to they alienated us. for that reason i dont so myself ever going back to an sl viewer.

      • Some people let their imaginations run wild and bring in ‘jealously’ and ‘power struggle’ and other grand conflicts.

Reality is far less interesting. A few emerald developers broke really basic rules and have to live with the consequences. Third party viewers will live on and be just fine. Emerald’s features and source code will live on and be just fine under a different name and more responsible management.

  75. omg this leaves me totaly disfunctional in sl. I was so use to doing things the old LL viewer way and then I took the Emerald way into my being… I use double tap TP was like my first language, autopilot liberated me, the chest physics made my avatar feel fleashy and alive this in particulure really gave the word *Emersive” some real weightt in second life… this only more really spells the ruin of second life than the end of Emerald I see more and more people fleeing to other less opressive grids and soon comerce will follow and SL will be a ghost town… this has happend before… it will happen again! If LL is smart, they will emulate all those great emerald things into some new viewer …but in all my years, I have never found LL to be empathetic or show any marked sensitivity in gaging the desire and feeling of its user base. they seem totaly imune to the fact we exist :(

  76. well, I don’t have a Lew Degree, but I don’t think there is much we, as users, can do to protest this idiotic move by LL. By killing off the inovations of Emerald, they really cheapen SL. The rivalry of LL and the Emerald viewer should have never started to begin with, and so it is now, going to the viewer 2.1 is not my first choise. I’ve tried to use it before and I can’t even figure out how to turn off seperate sounds…

As LL owns the grid, they have complete control of who or what can access it. But this goes back to the question of “Why make it open in the first place?” When you make something “open”, you have to accept that someone might make a better product. (anyone remember Mircosoft vs Netscape).

So, as I say my peace, I do have a thought for the development team, Start a new grid and put LL out of Business! If you can produce such a wonderful product in so short a time, your more than capable of making your own grid, free of the massive lag that infests SL today. Don’t look at this as a end of Emerald, but turn it around and make something so far ahead of Sl, that we will flock to it.

But, in any case, I, a long time user of Emerald will continue to log in with it until the doors close for good, and then move on to the next TPV, At least until they are killed off by corperate backbiting. SL will suffer, and LL will lose too much of it’s own users to make playing enjoyable anymore.

Thank you all for trying to make SL better,

    Lyte

  77. Well it’s sad to see this happen, but my question to you the users of Emerald and Secondlife. Are you going to sit still for it? It seems to be the consensus that this was an assault on an independent viewer in order to gain “market share” by Linden Labs.

There’s only one way to punish those maggots, and that is to refuse to give them any cash. Write to them and let them know of your displeasure at this despicable act (if you really feel that way), and ensure that they understand that they won’t get one red cent from you until they change course and give the Emerald Team an achievable goal.

  78. For me, Emerald was the best viewer I ever used and I feel very sad for seeing it die.

  79. Arabella Steadham said:

“The primary issue that resulted in the demise of Emerald was the attempted and failed takeover of the project, far in advance of any requirements deadline set by Lindenlab. This hostile takeover was initiated by Jessica Lyon.”

You mean the way you staged a hostile takeover from FC? :-) Just sayin’…..

So you’re telling us the deadline for compliance with LL’s conditions was still in the future and that LL was essentially still waiting for your answer while all this background drama was taking place?

You seem to be saying the decision to end Emerald was made by the Emerald team itself and not LL because the team virtually self-destructed?

Jesus… this infighting bullshit in your own ranks is the scabby end. And we were hoping from stability from YOU? You had it all and you,(meaning the previous leadership and the current members), pissed it away for yourself and us too.

Do us a favor, release the code so others can take over and STAY OFF other TPV teams, lest you kill them too.

  80. *thinks fractale was workiing for the other side*

  81. I am in grief and sorrow, hearing this sad news makes me want to quit second life.
I can’t use viewer two at all, and emerald is the only thing that makes me feel good playing second life
I just can’t believe Linden lab is being such a douche bag….
I’ve been with emerald since last year. Such great memories and neat tools…
why must it all come to an end?

  82. I propose not to enter a day in SL
    protest

  83. I hope someday someone will put LL out of this business. What jealousy Company.. full of hate they are..

The Community has a better Company deserved then LL.

  84. Well,

No shit. Get an education and be part of the web morons. We’ve been developing the web since it’s introduction. We don’t have a single pity for the crack addict script kiddies. You were warned a long time ago not to join Linden Lab’s TPVP. You did it any way like complete fools that you are. And you never once had a reputation because you don’t provide what is needed to get one.

You’ve had the ideas given, you have had what was needed to make it work. All FREE and provided by the words we write under the gnu/gpl license.

If you cannot do it, don’t. Save everyone the drama that modular systems is. Save us the drama of your selfish ways and only wanting to be known as “leet”. We don’t need it. Get a life before you start screwing with peoples second lives.

    Ted

  85. Damned LL to Hell! “F”ing Idiots don’t care about creativity or content, only control and all original ideas being theirs…

    I LOVE EMERALD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

sighs and heads off to have a strong drink to calm the nerves….

    Jas

  86. Hopefully a few feel as I do … I still have my account in SL but have rid myself of the tier and the sim have only my 512 sqm and question if being a part of LL is really what I want to do after seeing them kill the good and force viewer 2 on us… how stupid … they won’t even try to take the good from emerald and use it for a viewer of their making … so sad.

  87. So I made a free shirt, because I feel like we got to show them how we feel. (Feel free to ask, copy & spread.)

    Coz EMERALD RULEZ

  88. To all the people touting clients like Emergence as being the solution:

Have we forgotten something? Emerald only recently advised its users that one of the key requirements Linden Labs specified was the removal of ALL instances of the KDU (ie: emkdu.dll and llkdu.dll) in order that some esoteric GPL compliance be satisfied.

I guess its okay when other viewers violate the GPL, just not Emerald. Because they are deceptive. Because they can’t be trusted. You know, the usual rigmarole.

How does this relate to Emergence?

Well, Emergence, based as it is off an Emerald build, uses llkdu.dll (like a good many other officially recognised clients, including the linden labs one). Correct me if I am wrong, but isnt that one of the encrypted files that has been so maligned over the past fortnight?

And why should I trust one ex-emerald dev when I am not supposed to trust anyone else?

“If you learn anything from this whole experience… do not ever trust binaries that you do not fully trust the source of! …I can fully promise that emergence will be entirely free of any malware or hidden code of any kind to the very best of my ability.”

    *cough* “llku”. ‘Nuff said.

    • “Well, Emergence, based as it is off an Emerald build, uses llkdu.dll (like a good many other officially recognised clients, including the linden labs one). Correct me if I am wrong, but isnt that one of the encrypted files that has been so maligned over the past fortnight?”

Yeah, but the difference is that Phox didn’t have a chance to add any code to llkdu.dll, did he?

      • Oh, its Phox and not Fractured who is being held responsible for this now? It still doesn’t change what I’ve said – neither of them has a chance to add anything to llkdy.dll and Emerald were still told they couldn’t use it OR the emkdu.dll. Out of concerns not for the code added, but because it wasn’t GPL compliant. Which means that ANY viewer using the KDU is also not GPL compliant. Which means that Emerald were held up to a standard that no other viewer on the grid (and I include the Linden Labs viewers in this)… NO OTHER CLIENT IS HELD TO THIS LOFTY STANDARD.

You can say what you like, you can offer every excuse under the sun but at the end of the day the facts are still facts. Linden Labs lied. They weren’t working with the Emerald devs as they claimed to be, they were in fact throwing everything possible in the Emerald devs way in the hopes they would fail.

Hey, this fits the term “denial of service” a hell of a lot more closely than anything Fractured is supposed to have done. I wonder how many of Linden Labs are prepared to admit it as such. I’m guessing “none”.

  89. And while I’m ranting and raving in the name of open computing, do not be dismayed when we find out your real names and show just whom you are for your complete lack of wisdom and understanding about open computing and what it means. You are a joke, you started off as a joke, and Linden Lab is even more of a joke in terms of what we want, what we are after, and what we will do to promote open computing and the right for all to have and do as one has the education and desire to provide for.

Suck up to evil, you get evil no matter your intentions.

Do what is right, give what you have, and the laughter will stop and cease to exist no matter your enemies.

You should be completely embarrassed to even contemplate joining Linden Lab’s TPVP polices or even being willing to engage Linden Lab on the level they play. You will never win in this field unless you “own”. With Linden not “owning” anymore due to their complete disrespect to the open source community as witnessed for years, you will never be able to give and provide to that which has NO RIGHTS (LINDEN) to dictate and expect..

Sure it’s over. But not because you had anything to do with it at all. And Linden is over as well and will dance to the pole in the attic they put there for us all.

    Ted

  90. Please continue to develop Emerald…I’ve tried the other TPV’s and they simply dont compare to it. Just because of a few bad apples dont toss the whole thing.

  91. D= R.I.P. Emerald!
I probably wont use SL any more now as EMERALD ruled and I hated the llabs viewers with a passion!

Thank you EMERALD team for your absolute awesomeness, hard work and generosity in making EMERALD the best! I’m going to keep it anyway, going to be hard to let go xD

    \m/ EMERALD \m/

    Steve Soup <— SL NAME

  92. Nooooooooooo thats the best viewer. :´(

  93. OMG! NO!!!!! I was really hoping that this wont happen… i LOVE Emerald… since i found and downloaded it, my SL was so much better! less lag, faster rezz and the extra features… im real sad about this… of course LL wants to get rid of the Emerald Viewer…

  94. Just four days ago you were advertising for developers with “the courage to help [...] bring the Emerald Viewer back from the brink.” Guess you didn’t find anyone with that courage.

Emerald Viewer far outstrips any other. What a pity the team behind it has torn itself apart just when they needed to pull together.

  95. I agree with most the comments made here. Emerald is the best & I will continue to use it till I am forced to use another third party viewer. I WILL NOT USE VIEWER 2. It is not user friendly. LL should be listening to thier customers & what we want. I too have cancelled my premium account like many others.

  96. its a dissaster , well i will leave sl now, i hate the viewer 2 from linden lab.

Thank you all team from emerald

  97. I love Emerald too, this news saddens me very much. Thanks to everyone on Emerald for making SL better for me for as long as it lasted :(

  98. Horrible news. Nothing lindenlabs has done viewer-wise has been anywhere, ANYWHERE near as good. Absolutely heartbreaking. I have no clue what viewer i will use now. I will piss and moan so much. What ever linden that pushed you guys over the edge: Fuck You and rot in hell. I hope you are as ashamed and disgusted by you as I am.

  99. So, how much did LL pay Fractured to pull the DDOS stunt I wonder? Because that was the proverbial nail in the coffin. That and letting “former” members of LL in. I hate to say I told you so, but…you know the drill.

  100. well why doesn’t emerald start creating there own viewer and there own virtual world. dont give up emerald. its not over yet. it will never be the same without you. you are by far one of the best viewers out there. i really hope you take everyones pleas to heart and never leave us. i know you can get back on your feet. you just have to trust in yourself and your users. if you dont LL will suffer big time.

  101. Is it just me or do people around Arabella having a recent habit of ending up under a bus >_>

  102. You know, LL could’ve simply developed a viewer like Emerald’s and worked with Emerald, joined forces and made a great viewer. But Nope, instead they pushed Emerald out and is trying to force people use their shitty viewer. Course.. if LL had “joined” with Emerald, they probably woulda taken it over completely and fucked it up. Cuz that’s what they do. They fuck shit up. Well LL, your efforts are wasted. I will NOT use Viewer 2. It’s an ugly viewer that is very UN user friendly. The buttons do not make it easy for new OR old users figure out where the hell things are and it will NEVER match up to Emerald. So even if LL disables Emerald, I will find a different viewer to use.

  103. I am seriously considering downgrading to a free account as LL cant supply me with a viewer that comes anywhere close to Emerald.

I hope the more trustworthy members of the Emerald team regroup soon & give us an even better stronger viewer than before. Charge me for it if you like I would gladly pay to have something I can use rather than the useless LL V2 abomination! Better still build a whole new world, a 3rd life & knock LL off their pedestal, competition is good for everyone.

Thanks Emerald lovelies for giving the people what they wanted, we will miss you, come back soon.

  104. I am really disappointed to see you guys leave :-( LL is gettting on alot of people’s nerve with their nonesense. You guys really worked hard. Hats off to the emerald team. Emerald, best viewer ever!

  105. Based on refreshes it looks like some comments are still being silently removed, just like last post.

  106. Wow!! This is truly sad news. The Emerald viewer was really what made Second Life for me. I have tried other viewers and none of them compare to Emerald.

I have read all these posts and wish to add my thoughts as well.

If Linden Labs does not want the Emerald viewer, then why not someone create an online world where the Emerald viewer is accepted? We are not bound to Second Life. We are free to roam other online worlds. It would be sad to leave SL tho because of all the friendships I have made and all the money I have spent, but just like in Real Life, sometimes we have to pick up and plant our roots somewhere else.

If Linden Labs is so stupid about this whole matter, they deserve to lose customers. It is through this incident that I have clearly seen the true colors of Linden Labs — green. They are green with envy and jealousy that their own viewer does not even compare to what Emerald offers.

As I sat here and read all these posts, I can not help but laugh because so many seem to be cancelling their premium accounts. If I had a premium account, I would cancel it too LOL.

Money talks, and when enough people cancel their premium accounts or even leave SL for other online worlds, maybe they will finally wake up and they will see what they have done.

For the love of (online) god(s), Linden Labs did you not anticipate there would be such an uproar? LOL. You (Linden Labs) handled this all wrong. Instead of chasing Emerald away and making it so difficult for them to comply with your ridiculous requirements, you should have embraced Emerald and made that your official viewer of Second Life. You have clearly seen how popular the Emerald viewer was. It was the perfect compliment to Second Life.

I dont know if this will be the demise of Second Life, but I sure hope that Linden Labs suffers because of their stupidity.

  107. I love using Emerald. It IS the best TPV out there. If emerald cant view SL then i will make a point and use every non approved TPV out there Like Nano viewer just to make a poiunt. I REFUSE to use SL2!!!!

  108. this is what i was saying on the previews post.. LL had gone on the war ground against Emerald’s team just cause your viewer was more flawless than their viewer 2, and you guys felt for it.

  109. Well it’s like this in my opinion, LL are just a bunch of rich bastards who don’t give a toss about what their customers really want. I for one cannot run anything except Emerald because my puter is old and slow. I choose to run Emerald because it is the superior viewer and I will be lost without its advanced features. To the Emerald team all I can say is thankyou for your hard work though I have to admit I am rather disappointed that you apparently have given up. For those of you out there who think that Second Life is your only choice then I suggest you check out InWorldz, especially if you want to own land because of it’s superior design based on a complete rebuild of OpenSim. Thankyou again Team Emerald, you Rock!

  110. Wait … OMG … I feel like the slow kid who got the joke ten minutes after everyone else. I’m not going to ruin the joke for anyone else, but I get it. I totally get it. Team Emerald, you are absolute geniuses. GENIUSES! This needed to be done and you played it like a chess game. I don’t even mind the drama and the head games. I fell for it just like everyone else, and I don’t even care. HELLZ YEAH I am totally on board!!!

    • I have no idea what you’re talking about, Mac, so I guess it’s the little yellow bus for me … but from your tone, I’m very hopeful.

      • I understand what Mac is saying. . . If you wanna ask me about it, feel free to message e in-world.

  111. Viewer 2 is the Edsel of viewers :D

  112. as soon as LL block emerald, send in support tickets and complain. drown them!

  113. I’m not going to sit here and waste my breath downing Linden Labs, as it does no good. All I want to say is I do thank the Emerald Team for all their time, effort, patience and dedication to the project! You all are the reason that residents like us can enjoy Second Life! Thank you!

  114. This is disturbing, but not unexpected. LL has disliked Emerald from the start and was just waiting for one little ‘incident’ to use as a reason to shut them down. But…from experience, be careful stating your feelings to Linden Labs, they dont care! They will shut your account off and will ban your IP address if you piss them off enough.

    • they seem to be loosing alot of ppl as it is,if you acc is over due they block you from paying it, so you have to call them & from Australia its abit expensive.i think i agree with Emerald team this is the end,but only for SL & LL,since phil came back it went downhill as fast as he sat down.BUT Emerald team keep making the viewer coz there are other grids that use it like OS grid 3rdrock & many other opensim grids,i might even learn to script so i can update myown later on…GL with the future guys & gals :)

  115. I will use Emerald until I can’t….then I will go. I have tried, really tried to use V2, and it is just horribly broken. I will miss my SL so, I just don’t know how I will ever find something to replace it.
Thanks to the team for all their terrific work.
    Sometimes the Dragon wins.

  116. im deeply sad, i have a very old system and emerald was the only viewer that runs well no other viewer will rezz for me at all and trust me i try them all and have done :(

now i worry i wont be able to be or enjoy my sl as all ill be bale to do is log on and maybe im.
i wish i could afford a new pc but sadly right now i dont have that luxury
i really do wish you guys the best thank you emerald team i wish you all the best but mostly PLEASEEEEEEEE DONT GIVE UP!

waiting for a sapphire viewer instead :P

  118. I can’t believe it. I just downloaded your “swansong” final version that you have been working on for 6 months: 2600. And guess what’s in it? EMKDU.DLL.

And, no this not the installer “grabbing it” or Windows being TOO smart. I scrubbed my drive of any instances of emkdu, including the LOCAL TEMP file that you claimed the installer was grabbing emkdu from, before i downloaded 2600. So, emkdu HAD to be included in this release.

    I’m speechless.

    Move on, will you, huh.

    • How about you move on? Frankly until Linden Lab ceases using its own KDU file, no one is required to listen to them on that front.

If EMKDU is in violation of GPL, then so is Linden Lab’s own LLKDU – end of story on that one.

On top of that, if the information coming out in third party forums is to be believed, Linden Lab was planning on hiding code in their own KDU file as well. Possibly a system very similar to what emerald has in it.

      Makes ya wonder, doesn’t it?

      • This may shed a little light on what LL uses the KDU for, and why LL banned TPVs from using it….. or maybe not :-)

        http://tiny.cc/32m8l

      • “until Linden Lab ceases using its own KDU file, no one is required to listen to them on that front.”

This suggests that the files are identical or nearly so. I don’t think that is the case. Without doing a diff on the files, it’s impossible to say.

“If EMKDU is in violation of GPL, then so is Linden Lab’s own LLKDU”

That also is an incorrect statement. Linden Lab’s viewer is not under the GPL, but the source that they released has the requirement that all of the TPVs be released under GPL. Apples and Elephants.

“Linden Lab was planning on hiding code in their own KDU file as well.”

Which was and is within proprietary code, not open source, which is why they got pissed, and rightly so. It’s their code and they are not obliged to release it. This scandal has shed a spotlight on code that they wanted to use to help enforce DCMA takedowns and to stop hackers from stealing. It’s a very real problem that LL wanted to keep for themselves, which is why the code that they have is closed source and why they insist that TPVs be open source. It’s a matter of control.
What “makes me wonder” is why this is being spun so hard.

  119. I encourage everyone to keep using emerald regardless of LL’s demands. They may have won in shutting down emerald’s dev team, but until they ban emerald users from connecting to the grid I WILL ALWAYS USE EMERALD. If they do ban emerald then it is pure jealousy on their part. (stupidity in my opinion, meanwhile i hope emeralds old dev team start a new project under the disguise of a new name and continue their legacy as the king of viewers. Emerald for me till the day they ban it.

  120. Just a wild idea….What IF…The Super Emerald Team could create a Grid….compete with SL, then they can still use the Emerald Viewer…Lindens at this point have NO competetion, maybe its time!

  121. I warned Philip Linden his second term had an expiration date… First he gives out copybot, now trashes a product better than his own. Can’t wait to watch the rest of this show =)

They came first for the Communists,
    and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
    and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews,
    and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew.

    Then they came for me
and by that time no one was left to speak up.

  124. I have no words for this. Linden Labs is, by far, the most incompetent and egregious band of money-grubbing pigs that I’ve ever seen run a business. Every single decision and course of action made by LL seems to further deteriorate the well-being of Second Life, alienate its dedicated user-base and slap reason in the face. I never thought I’d see the day they’d stoop this low, though. I’ve often joked to friends worried about losing this impeccable viewer that if LL were to axe Emerald, it’d be roughly equivalent to me sawing my own leg off because the other one was broken. Now I know the breadth of LL’s stupidity, though. There is a reason that Emerald is such a popular viewer, even despite the occasional bout of controversy (blown out of proportion as it was). The Emerald viewer was made to benefit not only the typical resident, but the experienced as well – those who wanted more functionality and smart design out of their viewer – a simple, familiar and easy to navigate GUI laden with countless improvements, features and tools that made life in-world exponentially more enjoyable. I feel that Linden Labs completely failed to realize that this type of viewer is the desire of its user-base, and their 2.0 viewer is an example of how little time they must spend in-world. A URL address bar? Clunky, obnoxious panels that butcher your view? When did the community ever even ask for an interface overhaul? I can see what they intended: a watered down, facebook-esque social networking turd that would draw the masses like flies. When their prized 2.0 bullshit failed to become the best thing since sculpted prims (they recently fired the guy who made those possible, by the way), it only seems natural that they, in their glorious, powerful position as overlords of Second Life, would seek to destroy the most competent viewer rivaling theirs. Congratulations, Linden Labs. Today you’ve succeeded in betraying half your user-base. Your customers. Your “residents”. Your company’s lifeblood. I might just be one of those many customers, but if things continue down this path, there might be one less drop of blood sustaining Linden Lab’s corporate body. Now, not to be too heavy on metaphors, but I’m gonna go saw someone’s leg off to vent my frustration.

  125. thanks to the Emerald team, thank you for making a viewer that worked, and working to keep it going against the odds. i wish you all well in your future endeavors, and i rewlly do hope someone deiced to continue the work you have done on Emerald. i wil luse it until it won’t log on. then i wont’ log on either.

  126. I’ll keep using my Emerald viewer until LL bans it. Damn!

  127. oh i really really loved emerald now i am totally pissed we the user should have some say in what we use some choice in what we use this is not democracy .We must remain strong in the face of adversity goooooooooooooooooooo Emeralddddddddddddd

  128. Bah, just use the code you have and start up under a new name with trustworthy developers. Updates may be slow, but it should be do-able. LL could care less about its users. I think I will find another virtual world to join.

  129. A sad day for Second Life.

  130. it is all a way to get SL’s code back in house proprietary.. they get rid of all the TPV’d and then they can change up the code and then its all LL owned again… i have said this for a long time… LL is going to kill itself with its greed and gluttony… i believe we are seeing LL in its death throws now… hows that 15+ million look now when 0% are going to run to OSGrid…

  131. Thank-you Emerald team for all your hard work and having the expertise to expand on, and stand on the shoulders of the linden client. What you developed was user friendly, feature rich and made SL a much easier experience for everyone. From built in huds, to customizations, safety and security at the AV level, to just all around joy at being able to load textures faster and double click teleports – vertical IM tabs.. wow. This was truly an evolution of the current client to a point that was intuitive and just worked. It was naturally just a better user experience without any learning curve. Once you went emerald – it was hard to go back to the main client because it felt grossly immature which is what it continues to be today. Viewer 2 is an unmitigated disaster and I dont say this lightly – I will not be able to continue my time and contributions within SL using that viewer. Well, thanks again, thank-you for fighting the good fight. It may be too soon for you all to consider this now, but I hope that perhaps in the not so distant future there might be a project worth joining for you all that will equate to bigger, better, brighter prospects for the enjoyment and satisfaction of all. Best wishes to you all, and thanks again. Its been a great ride. ~ Flanagan

  132. I like how tons of people are blaming LL.
If you read, it was clear the reason Emerald’s ending was internal.

QUOTE FOR QUOTE FROM THE BLOG:
“- The primary issue that resulted in the demise of Emerald was the attempted and failed takeover of the project, far in advance of any requirements deadline set by Lindenlab. This hostile takeover was initiated by Jessica Lyon.”

Emerald could’ve still went on with the regulations LL set, but the team is in shambles.

    • One of those regulations reportedly being the dismissal of three of its core devs. You know, the people directly responsible for coding the robust and user friendly client that Emerald was.

You’ll excuse me if I interpret LL’s actions as being entirely counter to their stated aims. Why, in the very email Phillip Linden sent out stating how terribly closely the Lab was working with Emerald to get it back to TPV, he goes on to invite the users to abandon ship. This must be some new definition of the word “helping” I wasn’t previously aware of.

    • Meh, Fuck the Lindens anyway

  133. So I’m going to have to “downgrade” to the latest client? One that can’t use LLKDU? Emerald doesn’t use OpenJPEG that well. :( Am I really stuck with that?

  134. If you shop around with your info you’ll find the entire team is to blame for this, but it appears LL set them up by trying to break up the team – though they only asked that they remove people who had a history of going against Linden policy, ergo breaking rules. Which means removing the shady operators – nothing wrong with LL wanting to protect their best interests that way. After that point there is one single person to blame whom I shall not name, as I have a feeling this will get deleted if I do. Transparency my ass.

  135. SORRY TO HEAR THAT EMERALD IS FINISHED WITH SL. I DID VERY MUCH ENJOYED USING EMERALD. IT WAS THE BEST VIEWER IN SL. I WILL LET ALL KNOW THAT I CAN COUNT THE TIMES I HAVE CRASHED CAUSE OF EMERALD PROGRAM IN LAST 2 YEARS. IT HAS ALWAYS WORKED GREAT FOR ME.

SO NOW IT IS GETTING TIME TO THINK ABOUT IF TO STAY OR NOT, OR FIND ANOTHER ONLINE GAME. COME TO THINK ABOUT IT I WAS PLAYING ON REDLIGHT CENTER (RLC). MAYBE ITS TIME TO CHECK IT OUT AGAIN.

  136. I wonder how many users they’ll lose over this. I can’t use the standard viewer because it disconnects my internet. They’re basically forcing me to quit. I hate to say this, but I hope other users have similar problems so they notice a huge decline in sl population and decide they need to change their attitude.

  137. what a load of shit..

  138. The day that Emerald quits working is the day I put notice in my sim that it’s closing and it’ll be the day I leave SL. I refuse to use such a bug riddled and slow viewer as LL’s viewer.

I STILL have Gemini v6 if that tells you how much I like LL’s viewer, I only went to the latest build of Emerald recently.

This is just a massive mistake on LL’s part when nearly 50% or more of the community is using Emerald, if they took away that they would lose thousands of dollars or more of people like me that will quit entirely.

  139. You know what.. LL can just shove it. Emeralds popularity was overweighting viewer 2.0. With any competition – they want to crush it. Makes their viewers not in use and a waste of spending time. Well you know what LL – then why initiate 3rd party viewers? They ultimatly wanted to kill Emeralds power. Seriously now – drop devs from demands of LL? How about I drop everything and make you loose $$$$ which would hurt your company. I’m sure there are many ppl spending 4 digit money a month. I want to know WHY was LL requiring to remove 3 ppl from the development? What significant purpose does this do for LL & Emerald team? Why not destroy others for one part like statistics. Open source is to make things better, which was the best thing LL could of done. Both LL & other teams can view each viewers to learn of features and what others want. Progress is now, the time to move forward and get out of harsh unnecessary requirements and improve on what matters and to the users. But in fact – some companies will not take on it very far. And they all wonder why things don’t work out ultimately in the end. If LL thinks this would push users to viewer 2.0 – mistaken plain and simple. They offered and opened 3rd party viewers and thus has been for a while. Unlike most gaming companies – they don’t offer such things. This is why LL was a great example. From seeing how they demand such requirements that others are not getting ( other projects) the same treatment… shows LL additions to the restrictions bizarre. Removing or lowering devs is a ridiculous “addition” I have ever heard. Maybe I am missing a key element to >why< they are doing this. Someone like me from Open Source developments not related to LL open source or game, have had requirements & restrictions but never ridiculous and always conformed with law – license – and company. Regardless of which is in popularity.

But you know what? I wouldn't quit. Even if those requirements are out of the world – they can be met – time is needed to be given & other devs to come aboard. Even for a short time to get others involved. I strongly suggest adding a SVN for ppl to look into the codes of Emerald source and upload their own fixes from the requirements list and get it done quickly. Since open source is Open Source – this is the best way to do it. It lets the team with users to get it right. There are many developers out there that would love to help or fix a few things and providing this is the best way to get others involved in the project. Especially now.

If Emerald had concluded the end that what this written blog says – the decision will stay finalized regardless of users comments & suggestions. In this case – farewell Emerald. And rise for 3rd party viewers forever.

    _Intel Inside

    forever

  140. Thank you Emerald Team for all your efforts, and a DAMN good Viewer! :D

  141. How you guys can give up where you have the 50% of the logins to SL?
And this was all what LL wanted right? And you guys are giving them what they wanted, instead of standing still and working on a better project to shove their faces, how your team can do better than their money hungry developers..
I always loved emerald, no viewer gave me this much of a control on my experiance and freedom..
I never used viewer 2 and I will never till they decide to block everything else to gain access to the servers. I downloaded the lastest emerald just now and will be using that till it dies out just like over 160 comments stated here.. and believe me there are tons of people who don`t make comments too.. This is such a shamefull day for Linden Labs and the worst day of every emerald user. Or rather 50% of second life users.

  142. LL Hasn’t posted their demands because they KNOW they have NO RIGHT to demand who is or isn’t a member of the Emerald development team, just as the Emerald team has no right to demand who Linden Labs employs, and who they don’t.

This is not a reason to disband the Emerald project, It seems to me that Arabella is closing it down because she is pissed off with whoever tried to get into her servers. Those are the people that need to be removed from the development team. Its been made abundantly clear that these kind of shenanigans will not be tolerated. Simply toss out the trash and go forward with a professional team, and continue the awesome work that has been done here.

The Emerald viewer accounts for 50% of SL logins for a reason. It must not be tossed aside simply due to an unreasonable demand, and a tantrum, which seems to be the case.

This is a sad day for Emerald users indeed. Here we were expecting an imminent release of the newest stable Emerald Viewer, only to be let down by what is appearing more and more to be a development team consisting of children and quitters.

Yes, this may be a harsh comment, but I feel very let down, and I’m sure, I’m not the only one.

  143. HOW CAN U GIVE UP? WOW! The 3 devs LL wants gone shud resign for the sake of the project. If they stay and put the whole thing at risk then they are to blame for its demise. Sometimes what we want isn’t what is best for the greater good. Emerald is the only viewer that makes sense. Please do not give up and if those 3 don’t see they are to be sacrificial lambs and step aside then fire them. So what a hostil takeover. It didn’t succeed and is no reason for you, the remaining brilliant minds to continue the great work we have all become accustomed to rely on. Please, rethink this.

  144. As an end user,I really like Emerald. I upgraded from the basic Viewer 2.O and never looked back. I don’t honestly care who Philip Linden is, or who made Emerald or the 2.0 Viewer. I do think what is important, reading all these posts, is for all the computer whizzes to realizes that ALL their fancy programming is in place to benefit, me, the average IQ guy. If Linden Labs puts in a hard to user viewer, I (and the millions like me who are NOT computer whizzes) wil just give up and go somewhere else. I don’t care about your contract…your market share…your programming languages, your beef with each other. I (and millions like me) only care about my online gaming experience. If you can’t handle that, well, then the next guy will. BTW-who is the next guy? Cuz, if SL gets really hard to use, I will be wanting a new gaming experience.

  145. Im so thankful for what Emerald has provided me over its life. Absolutely enhanced my time in SL.
Very sorry to the team who have made this possible.

I feel probably the same as many others in SL, when Emerald is gone, is SL going to be the same? Or do we move on too….

  146. this is sooo.. sad.. what i do now without emerald? i cant and dont want use a other viewer – sighs deep :(
Yes, i thank you to Emerald team for this amazing viewer..
i had a lot fun to play SL with your viewer..
still i have so much question ;/
what happen if so much user use the emerald viewer – why they are scared about this? why they have find a way and dont kill it?
it is stupid to kill such innovate and intellectual work!!!
if they LL do this with all what is like that, then SL dont grow fast and become so fast better..
this all dont make sense to me how LL act..

  147. SO DAMN SAD
    love Emerald so bad!!!
Thank you Emerald Team for this amazing viewer.

  148. sucks this is gone.. other viewers dont want to run on my PC so much.. and now that i downloaded the new emerald.. it keep crashing.. so no more sl for me.. OH joy…

  149. I cant believe it.. How is it any of LL business what people work on the emerald project.. So i guess you guys are giving up for reasons you dont want to mention..

  150. Ya Know I am not one for posting on Fourms But this is one time i truly had to . To the Emerald Dev Team Thank you So much for the Viewer you have provided to us. I might not be vocal in the forums but I have used Emerald faithfully Since i found out about it almost 2 years ago . Even when the CCS Admins Tried to Ban the Viewer I told them to Stick it I will use Emerald until the Day LL’s Get Jealous and Ban it . I am sadden to see that is actually going to come to pass . For those of us that have truly appreciated all your hard work It is our greatest hope that we see you emerge In a Better position to again Teach Linden Labs how to make a a Viewer People actually want to use . Though I fully understand why it has to come to an end . Just know there are some of us even the quiet ones that have and would have and hopefully will again Stick with Some of the Best and creative minds in the VR World . And all I have to say to Linen Labs is the Day I am forced to rely on your Crap that you just throw out at people . Is the last Day I will Sign into Secondlife .
To all the Best Members of the Dev Team I truly truly hope that this isn’t goodbye . But Instead a ” See you again Soon ”

    Thank You All!!

    Fingers

  151. Why not sending all our protest to LL’s? via ticket and in world ims and many other ways. Iw would probably not do much , but hey
at least they would see how many they upset with their way to handle emerald !!!! for my person I am very sad and also very angry.
Emerald was my best viewer, and i will log in with emerald until ll unables the login.
Dear emerald team, I still hope there will be ways to keep emerald running… and i thank you for a wonderful Sl experience through emerald.

  152. What is the latest version number? When one clicks on the link on the opening screen of the viewer one gets a blank page at Emerald.net. If one goes to the link you provided one gets the previously released 1636. Is this the ‘latest viewer’? I am using the 2587 beta currently.

  153. LL = LooserLab – Not sure i can remember when LL last time did something i like and not the opposite. Feel it’s more and more time to leave SL for good

  154. you´re all talkin of a war… so then – if we see it that way, it should be OUR time, the special forces – us residents – to support emerald.
i know it wouldn´t be that easy – but why don´t we organize us? we could, better we SHOULD, make a petition to support the emerald team. and stepping forwards – sry ll-donks, but how would it be if all of our new group members wouldn´t buy anything on SL for one day? LL doesn´t react? no problem, we don´t buy anything for 2 days, and so on – until they let us know whats´s going on in there barracks :) maybe i´m crazy, i´m a newbie on SL, but if the emerald really really wants to go on we should think about going in that direction

  155. Can we not organise a one day protest?
All emerald viewers boycott sl for one day?

  156. Goodbye Emerlad <3 I always knew Linden Labs would burn anything good made from or about this wonderful virtual world we live in. Now let us pray Linden Labs gets some Karma and sells out, hopefully well get someone who actually gives a damn about the residents not just numbers and money. Always been an Emerald Supporter, and always will be.

  157. There are so many times that I have been very thankful for the features in Emerald when I’m in the middle of a difficult project. Designing clothes is nice but it gets tough when we want to do better. Emerald makes it so much easier and efficient with the local browser than actually works and save multiple uploads and mounds of time. The Asset browser that is found anywhere else is worthless and isn’t even coming close to be useable either. And I’m beginning to see that the fair market isn’t so fair anymore no matter how much of an effort is put into the best third party viewer. LL didn’t really want it happening since they released a white elephant. *sigh*

  159. I can only echo most of those above – you have shown many what can be done with a team of dedicated bright developers – you have created the best viewer SL has ever seen. I am disheartened by Linden Labs. It is a sad day for creativity, but perhaps like a phoenix……

  160. A very sad day. Having downloaded the latest Emerald last night and it refused to run (cannot find any way back either) I have slept on this issue and am resigned to the outcome. Thanks Emerald Team for all the pleasure you have given us. I am sure that all thinking people here knew that LL was trying to find excuses to shut down all rivals. My theory is that if they can do away with all TPVs they will get much more money for LL when it is sold, probably to Microsoft or Google who will simply rob the technology. I am so sorry for all the creators out there who have made SL such a wonderful place but I think the writing is on the wall. If you have any money invested in SL get it out now before it is too late. I shall spend the next few days saying goodbye to all my friends: I know it will be painful but at least now I have control, whereas, when SL is closed at the whim of a Linden, there might not be the opportunity of a dignified exit. Thanks again Emerald Team and I hope that, in what ever form you continue, either as a team or individually, that you are never treated as shabbily again.

  161. sorry if i can just point out something here….
Riddle me this? how can a company who provides a service demand the removal of a seperate companys employees (*LL*)) mainly employees who make the product functional??? or as arabella said AND I QUOTE “effectively the guillotine to the project.” were in LL’s TPV AGREEMENT does it state this????? and is this agreement a contract?

    • They cant and thats why Linden labs closed emerald from being used on ITS GRID – remember these people who develop emerald are only in SL because Linden labs created it. Theres a simple very simple answer to anyone who thinks they are indisposable to second life and the answer is this: Try logging in and asking Linden Labs to conform to your terms of service. Start telling Linden labs to go take a running jump if they dont do what you want them to do and they will because its their grid not yours they will say right get out! which is exactly what they have done. When youre a lodger in someones house you dont make the rules, they do !

  162. I’ve seen enough negative press and forum/blog posts about Emerald, and I think LL and many users are being far too harsh on the Emerald devs. Emerald is a great viewer (still easier to use than LL’s Viewer 2!) and has made a significant impact on SecondLife. The source code is available for all now (to some complainers: if you can’t figure out how to ‘hg clone’ the source won’t mean much to you anyway), so hopefully someone will pick up the reigns and continue development. With 50% of people in SL using Emerald, LL would be foolish to try to block Emerald logins. LL may have other plans and want to promote their own viewer, but Emerald has critical mass and will not be easy for LL to stomp out. THANK YOU, EMERALD DEVS, FOR MAKING SECOND LIFE BETTER!!!

  163. Many thanks to all the Emerald Dev Team. You made a superlative viewer, and you will be truly missed.

  164. I terminated my premium membership as a reaction to the Linden Lab’s behaviour. We should all unite to slow down SL’s economy and iniate a little riot to let them feel they just cannot act against the customers’ needs and desires. The Viewer Emerald is dead. Long live the Viewer Emerald.

  165. A friend on SL told me that instead of destroying Emerald viewer LL could have made an offer to buy it and work along side with your team to make an even better viewer all together.. but they seems to have an ego issue since they preferred to go as far as to force Emerald to close down.. I am just glad you guys still made a new update, you could have fought harder and maybe even play their own game and also give them your own requirements in response to theirs.

  166. Thank you for your work, despite all bullshit happen recently.

  167. I’ve seen enough negative press and forum/blog posts about Emerald, and I think LL and many users are being far too harsh on the Emerald devs. Emerald is a great viewer (still easier to use than LL’s Viewer 2!) and has made a significant impact on SecondLife. • Totaly true….And if LL see’s how many people agree (If they even care for anythong apart from greed and they’re want for not wanting to be outdone.) They’ll see it’s foolish and a massive mistake!

  168. OK People,Who Is Paying For SL WE THE PEOPLE!!!!!Linden Labs Has No Right Forcing On Us Wat They Want!!!!!We Are Paying Linden Labs To Support Wat We The People Want.Linden Labs Keeps Up With This Bull Stuff,And They Wont Have Any Second Life Because We The People Wont Be On SL.Viewer 2 Is One Big Pile Of Horse Dung!!!.Emerald Is Number One Viewer,So Why Dont All The People Speak Up And Tell Second Life Wat We Want Not The Other Way Around. After All Whos Paying For The Service……..

    • Totaly Agreed! EMERALD FOR SL AND THE PEOPLE! bugger the peice of shit vewier 2….it’s CRAP! So’s LL’s for doing this to Emerald cause of they’re stupid name of not wanting to be outdone, urgh.

  169. Dear Emerald developers (well, the non hackers anyway) i want to thank you for all the work you put in to the viewer, all the great ideas that no one else seem to be able to put in their viewers. before you i used sl, then i tried snowglob, both were pitiful agains the emerald i then D/L. It truely did add much to my experience. LL truly is at war with competition ( i have seen it with businesses) sometimes even covertly stalking owners (once again, i have seen it with my own eyes) so when there was a chance that emerald was going to comeback from all this, and even though i gave out positive messages hoping that this was so, i really knew that deep down, it would fail ultimately.so, “so long and thanks for all the fish”

  170. I hate LL so much for their stupid choices in wanting to cancel Emerald. It’s all I’ve ever used since I switched from the normal Second Life viewer. And I utterly love Emerald with all my heart, it runs easily and has only a few glitches here and there. But ultimately runs smoothly and so much easier to use. If they cancel Emerald I don’t know what to do. I don’t trust any other viewer or know that I would be able to use them not knowing if they will glitch as much as normal viewers do. I wish they would stick to using only a few good viewers and improving the glitches vs trying to look like they work hard by making all these diff. viewers that all glitch like crazy and ultimately suck ass. When they could use 3-4 diff. viewers as their main ones and constantly improve them and fix all the glitches making the patrons of SL want to play more. Because with all the glitchy crap going on in SL we all are starting to think LL doesn’t give two shits about us and our time on the game and instead only think of them selves and how well they can make them selves have a “name”. Please LL don’t cancel Emerald Viewer it’s the smoothest viewer I can use on my crappy laptop without not having the worst time on SL. Please go back to caring about the patrons of SL and making it fun again like you use to when I was a noob. Now SL is such a hassle to want to play with the glitches it makes me and others miserable.
Hope for hopes sake that Emerald stays with us forever.

  171. The Emerald Viewer is dead.
    Long live the Emerald Viewer.

Lets silently protest against the Linden Labs’ behaviour as to the Emeral Viewer.

Join the Emerald Users In Silent Protest Group. Paste the following line into local chat when inworld and click it:

    secondlife:///app/group/2125ad04-6314-60f6-4bd4-1d22547f4333/about

  172. Thank you, for all time on project, thank you for give me the possibilities of good time in sl, thank you for support, thank you for all.

My bad words for LL are not in english anyway they understand :)

This is an attack to emerald comunity also!

  173. Lebowsky, this moderate thing is aautomated reply we all get

  174. SHIT! Sucks so baaaad!

Thanks for all you’ve done, guys. You made the most superior viewer of them all, hence the numbers. Gawd…puts me off SL even more! It’s going downhill! The greed of the Lindens knows no bounds!

  175. Fiftypercent (or more) of loyal longterm SL users prefer Emerald (and other similar third-party viewers). What does that say to you Lindens?? And what about if that 50 percent of users – the ones spending real money and keeping the lame program afloat against the tide of griefing noob alts – vote with their feet now and create their OWN Secondlife that goes back to its more noble roots? I’m sure there’s enough will and expertise out there to do it. Liberate SL from the Lindens!!!

  176. I love Emerald, don’t want it to leave sl it was the best thing that happened to sl. thanks for all your hard work, sorry to see Emerald to have to leave sl.

  177. [...] groovy, unfathomable, amazing, incredible, about-time, eye-popping, heart-stopping, booby-dropping, and most of all, just plain phenomenal, the Emerald Viewer will now become officially banned from [...]

  178. “Linden Lab has made demands of the team that are impossible to meet.”
Okay, Look, I LOVE emerald, but what? are we suppose to feel sorry for you because you can’t follow the ToS? The guidelines they laid down? It wasn’t because you COULDN’T, it is because you WONT.
The other Third party viewers can manage to do it. (cept the illegal ones of course.)
Sigh, True it is sad, I really love emerald, but you blew it. That’s all there is to it.
On the other hand, I do think LL is, for lack of a better term, being straight out, Nazis with their rules. People are banned left and right for ridiculous things, I wont go on, but weather we like it or not, we gotta deal with it, they are the boss.

  179. I came here from Utherverse red light center. An adult 3D site far behind SL in user creativity. More expensive, but easier to use. I fell in love with SL due to it’s creative freedom for the user.
Now I feel like I’m being handed the tools chosen for me, instead of allowing me to choose my own.
I love emerald and will use it till they stop us, This is so sad and forces me to choose to put all my land up for sale. When sold, I am giving up my premium membership when it expires next year.
Please don’t give in to LL’s pushy ways. Emerald is by far superior to their viewer 2. I will not use viewer 2, even if I’m forced to. This is a stupid act of spitting on it’s customer base. Did I get a survey to fill out with my preferences? HELL NO
Isn’t the customer needs and wants most important in business? Yes of course. This is a stupid move for LL to force the Emerald team out. I’m certain LL will regret what they are doing. But it will be to late when they realize their screw up.
Thank you Emerald team, for all your gallant efforts and giving us such a great viewer to use.

  180. I think you, Emerald Team, can continue the project, but aiming OPENSIM.

    Good luck :)

  181. I don’t know if people remember past posts topics regarding tvp policies an such.. but its an example none the less of how things have been done an in you can see past your grief /sednaess/ feelings of numorus ideas.. maybe you can see my point.. heres an past post regarding an incident with TPVs policy on third party viewers some an remember so on.. its just..idk.. 4 years an so much effort feels lost for me. i honestly gave all the other tvps a shot but imprudence crashes like crazy for me. an the others the t are NOT LL supovised are well.. not what i am accustomed to really. =( but as for the point in link yes it seems this has been going on for a wile before it all came light *bows head* http://www.massively.com/2010/02/26/second-life-third-party-viewer-policies-not-well-received/

  182. I knew it, I knew it…. as soon as a LL joined Emerald team it gets shut down… what a suprize…
why dont Emerald team close it down and reinvent the viewer to LL standards.
A good viewer like this shouldnt suffer from a few issues…

  183. I just wanna thank you for showing us the standard of viewer we could have had & the dedication & total crap you had to carry that thru was just so damn sad.
Kudos on what was a fantastic builders viewer & I hope EVERYONE sends requests to LL …however the hell we do??? (hafta suss that out meself) but if LL wanna be sole provider for what TPV’s have done then they oughta be makin a builders version real quick coz seems to me is only us builders still spendin in SL

  184. hardly going to be blocked on the 3rd when philip linden is on vacation until the 6th…. They left domilyn in charge lol

  185. know what really sucks I am PAID USER OF SECONDLIFE … and look I think this is the best viewer for SL … there money hungry bastereds EMERALD VIEWER ROCKS … LL YOU NEED TO GROW UP

  186. I’m a paying member of SL, but I won’t be after today. I’m hoping the Emergence viewer will be a decent substitute, but it seems unlikely. I encourage others to protest this action, including the Emerald team! Stop running around with your tail between yours legs! You are talented designers, coders, programmers and probably hackers as well…now you have free reign to do what you want! It doesn’t have to be called Emerald, just release something else that’s just as good as it was. I feel like there’s some horrible truth you’re not telling us, did SL pay you guys money to go away? Today I’m throwing my measly $7.00 a month in their face, it’s a pebble in a very very big pond, but it’s a start.

  187. Well… im not suprised LL taking more and more actions towards Emerald after the hard fact that their vewer 2.0 is a big failure. When realizing that approx 50% of the logins is by emerald they had to come up with what ever excuse there was to try to stop or kill Emerald. The dev team of Emerald ought to have known they became a bigger and bigger threat to LL as the sucess of Emerald kept increasing. Even if LL is not acting with best interest its naive to think that the dev team had so much power to stand up against LL. If only the emerald team would be experienced enough, to play the violin of LL for another 6 months, agreeing with LL, releasing an een better version of emerald, and they would have 75-80% of total logins. THEN they would easily be able to actually even propose to sell it all to LL. Instead they started to fight internally and LL laughing all the time, succeeding in their strategy to put emerald out for good.

  188. Sad sad story. Heartfelt thanks to all the devs putting in tremendous amounts of work and doing an amazing job at making the SL experience better. You guys rock!

  189. A very very bad day for us users of Emerald, the best viewer ever! i tryd all others and they sucks! I spend thousends and thousends lindens in SL and i think i leave SL if i must use the linden viewers.
I hope Emerald find a way to let us use it again!!

  190. - The primary issue that resulted in the demise of Emerald was the attempted and failed takeover of the project, far in advance of any requirements deadline set by Lindenlab. This hostile takeover was initiated by Jessica Lyon.

The post itself said LL was not the main reason behind the demise of emerald, but a hostile takeover from within, so why is everyone griping about LL? The fact of the matter is that LL would not have even been involved had it not been for the transgressions (pretty serious ones, at that) as of late. Moreover, the idea that LL has been trying to undermine Emerald to get people to use Viewer 2.0 is simply preposterous. If anything, they would encourage people to develop more useful viewers, which is why codified the third party viewer policy and list in the first place. LL’s concern is not over how many people use Viewer 2.0, because that makes them absolutely no money whatsoever. Their concern is over how many people log on to the grid and make L$ and land purchases, that’s how they make their money.

When a third party viewer steps over the line and violates both the terms of the third party viewer policy and the trust of users, they have the right to step in and protect their customers. The fact that they allowed users to continue to log in with Emerald demonstrates they valued those customers, and they wanted them to stay. If for some strange reason they wanted to make people use 2.0, they would have banned it on the spot.

Don’t blame LL for their greed and destroying a user base. LL hasn’t banned emerald yet, they didn’t tell them to stop. In fact, they weren’t even involved up until the drama a couple weeks ago.
If you want to talk about greed and destroying a user base, blame the Emerald team themselves; stop looking at them through rose-colored glasses. It was their personal egos, drama, and power grabs within the Emerald group that brought the emkdu.dll problems, the ddos attack, and now this power grab, all of them brought down this project.

A lot of heart and soul and mind went into Emerald, it’s evident anytime you open it up. So many helpful things to so many people. It’s a shame that the energy that was wasted on all the drama and infighting and power grabs and ddos attacks could have been put on making the best viewer even better. Nevertheless, thank you devs for all the hard work that you did, it’s a shame that it ended this way.

  191. I have been using Emerald Viewer for the past year and refuse to use anything less. I have tried almost ever single viewer that I know of in the past year and nothing comes close to Emerald. Even if I was forced to use Viewer 2, I couldn’t because it does not work for me. I cannot load my avatar in the viewer 2 so with the loss of Emerald, they will also be losing a dedicated user.

  192. Thank you for all your valiant efforts to provide grateful users with a much improved sl experience. Emerald Viewer has been a joy even with it’s minor flaws. I am sure that LL will find a way to make this last release unusable in a short time :(

Maybe someone at LL has an interest in the success of another game, this certainly isn’t in the best interest of SL. But then again, petty jealousy has always been enough of a reason for some to ruin the party for others. What a shame.

  193. Linden Labs suck for killing this viewer, I tried the V2 that was foisted on me by Linden developments and I HATED IT!! The camera controls which I have ALWAYS used for photography where pathetic meaning you had 2 separate controls where there was 1 (2 controls kept by Emerald) and I hated the side and bottom tabs in V2, it was all very pretty but cost me half of my viewing area and I couldn’t find anything in the totally alien interface, adding in the double click TP, always fly, bouncy boobs :)^^ and an incredibly powerful Radar allowing me to TP to people, Emerald ROCKED!! TOTALLY!! (well they never included shared media, but the rest of the product was so good I overlooked that :)^^ I know some of the tpv’s have SOME of these features but imo they are not as good :( I will carry on with Emerald as long as LL allow it but I know I will have to give it up at some point. I just hope the incredibly talented Emerald team – coups and schisms aside will develop a sister viewer with all these brilliant features (AND shared media :^^)that will overcome Linden Labs ‘problems’ and tell me where to get a copy. I will download it in a flash :)) Hmmmm wasn’t Second Life touted as an open source program meaning it would accommodate 3rd party viewers?? Am I wrong?? or are only INFERIOR viewers allowed??

  194. My reactions:

    1. Wow. This is one sad day for SL..

    2. I haven’t been using SL much lately, but I see myself using it even less now.

    3. I will stop using SL when I can no longer log into SL with Emerald, or some version of it. (Even if it’s not an approved one). If I am no longer able to use Emerald, I don’t see any reason for me to continue with SL.

I can’t use the new 2.0 viewer, I’ve tried over and over again, but I just can’t use it, it’s too confusing. I literally CAN’T use it. It’s not a matter of choice, I just literally can’t use it! I can’t figure out how to do even the most basic of things with it. I struggle to IM people, or even do basic things like change clothes. So given that, I see myself with no other option.

    4. We need some group to work out how to make a version of Emerald that hides itself as the 2.0 viewer. Please? Where are all the hackers? We need you!

    5. .. Really this is the worst thing LL could of done. Now an underground version of Emerald will pop up, that has all the features that LL hates. Which is kinda good for us in a way.. This like temporary textures will come back. Expect a version of Emerald to pop up soon that has full inventory backup ability.

    6. Why is LL so stupid? Just one bad decision after the other?

  195. I would cancel my premium account.. But I don’t have one.

    ALSO!

Thankyou so much ModularSystems, for all your hard work and for the great viewer you’ve given us. But please! Don’t give up on us! Please please don’t! Keep making the viewer, make it for OpenSim!

  196. I’m sure alot of it has to do LL pressuring and wanting everyone to use there Viewer to, which I hate, but it also looks like there was alot of in fighting from the people working on the viewer as well. But I do’n really understand why LL would want 3 of development team to be removed.

  197. The Beta version of Linux had two Bugs.
One was when it was in demand, the other was in the teleports.
I will test the final version and I report if it has bugs.
Congratulations to the team at Emerald.

  199. FUCK YOU LINDEN LAB,AND FUCK YOUR VIEWER 2 NOT GONNA USE IT!

  200. I guess emerald really wouldn’t have no power against Linden labs even if they put there minds to keep working. they just have there viewers blocked. but atlest i say keep going for OpenSimulator Grids.

  201. Final version for Linux has the same bug.
When it opens to search the fps drops from 30fps to 3fps is very bad this bug.
Hope you fix it quick because you can not play it well.

  202. Damn you Linden Labs :( What would I do if they shut Emerald access down? There’s no viewer as good, that’s what LL wants I guess, get rid of their competition. Any ideas on viewers not too far below Emerald in quality and features? Maybe I’ll just have to go with Viewer 2.0 :’( Thank you for all you’ve done.

  203. Damn!!! But thanks guys, the work you did, really made my enjoyment and education of VWs. As is anything surrounded by dedicated and enthusiastic people, the energy made me want to know more, learn faster, explore more. See you down the road.

  204. I think it’s pathetic that LL has to push they’re CRAP v.2 on SL users when the fact is…..They just can’t stand been stood up…Emerald is the best and the minute i found tis out…..It makes me feel like LL has just dopped they’re users like a bag of shit….Killing off Emerald LL? idiot’s…Get oever your ego and let Emerald Live…it has nother to do with Malicious codes when a post i’d found (that was deleted 5minutes after being posted) was that the hacker on the lose was the only problem, Thus LL useing it as they’re oppertunity to rid themselve of the competition (Emerald) and force they’re crap vewier 2 on Second life users. Talk about loseing chose….I’d rather go to a viewer not supprted by LL thats EXACT to emerald (if kiling Emerald off is in fact true.) that crawl to vewier 2.. Sad when somone as big as LL lower’s themselves to this kinda crap….

  206. Let us not jump to any finalities nor any opinions even. It is all too early. Linden Labs has no choice but to welcome back Emerald Team. I don’t agree with Linden Labs banning Emerald Viewer and at the same time I will look at the larger picture. Second Life will not make it without Emerald Viewer. So when Linden Labs sees its mistake it is back to normal.

  207. Danke emerald der viewer ist im vergleich besser wie der von sl. das ist woll der springende punkt.
    Danke euch caran

  208. Well if everyone who uses emerald does a mass protest and not logg into sl for a week. That will do more of a wake up call then cashing out , not buying lindens or down-grading an account.

  209. When this version of Emerald no longer works I will no longer be a Second Life resident.

Thank you so much for creating a stable, exceptionally functional viewer for use with my netbook. I am very sorry to see you folks are being pushed out by LL. Thank you for all the hard work and dedication you have given us all.

  211. p.s i stand by my later comment. Emerald Return and build a base with the OpenGrids. Way LL is running sooner later they will take SL Down with them. lol I use Emerald when i connect to my OSGrid account. and i like it more then the viewers they suggest. but then i been spoiled by the features. lol

  212. I sigh, Emerald was the best TPV on the street. Thanks for enriching my Sl experience.

  213. Linden Lab sucks. </3

  214. Man I’m glad I’m helping linden Labs loose money.

    Love grandfather clauses. <3

  215. [...] When I booted Emerald Viewer today I was met by a new blog entry on the login screen, titled “The End”. Since Emerald has been having trouble lately I guessed they were going to stop making new viewers. I was right. Read the blog entry here. [...]

  216. Why doesn’t Modular Systems start their own VR world??? Call it Third Life???
They have a head start with the best viewer going
When I can’t use Emerald, I will cancel my LL account

  217. i suppose, i will quit playing SL for months, or years….until something better than sl viewer, comes out…
    this is a sad day…

  218. NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It’s terrible!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is the best viewer I’ve tried, and SL has no fun to play with so boring SL viewer2…. maybe I’ll change to play World of Warcraft… if LLabs block Emerald to run…..

  219. Emerald = Best Viewer ever
Viewer 2 = Extremly big crap

  220. I am very sad to see EV leaving SL, under any circumstances. I have never liked SL viewers. And they have never lived up to meeting my needs. It could very well be my last day in SL.

  221. Don’t you people even read the Post all those people crying that Lindens DID it.
Some of the Emerald Dev would not comply with the List while others wanted too.
Then the group that didn’t attempted to do a Hostile Take over of the group that wished to work with Lindens.
Lindens was big enough to work with the team after the past Events, and give them a chance. It was Emeralds own infighting that caused this not Lindens.

  222. “- The primary issue that resulted in the demise of Emerald was the attempted and failed takeover of the project, far in advance of any requirements deadline set by Lindenlab. This hostile takeover was initiated by Jessica Lyon.”
Please people Read that thats not Lindens fault… all you want to leave SL cause this team had an Infight? Please get real…
    Then this
“As at 2.00pm SLT today, an attempt was made to pervert the in world open Emerald viewer group by a known griefer using the account Greenlife Emerald. As a consequence of this, I tried to close the group down. Unfortunately, I could not do this in time, so many will now no doubt read disturbing notices put out by Greenlife Emerald. I suggest you read this blog for any information on Emerald.”
Using Emeralds group to Peform Griefing?

Linden asked for the removal of 3 people they felt were Untrustworthy and had a habbit of causing many of the trouble with Emerald. Lindens gave the team a choice.
Emerald could have gotten new developers to fill these roles.
If Lindens wanted to shut everyone down and force people to use their viewer they can do that in a heart beat. But they don’t.
Lindens have not blocked the use of the last Emerald Viewer so you all can still use it all you want.

Why are you people even in Second Life if you hate Lindens so much?

  223. LL may be be the “boss” when it comes to third-party viewers, but they won’t have as many people to boss around. Just like another poster, I will be selling all my land, and ending my Premium membership — and I may never return at all. I won’t be spending my hard-earned money to use a program precisely as THEY dictate. LL screwed up. Period.

  224. Ive been an Emerald fan and user from the first day and have downloaded the latest beta and it is fantastic. Emerald was the best viewer hands down. I am so sorry to see this happen.

  225. as a builder in sl i found the ll viewer unwieldy and over complicated it looks old and the silly menus infuriating i went to emerald cos it was like the old sl one but better. shame on you lindens

  226. That’s USA, glad to life in europe! LL is bullshit, they are unable to program a stable system and killing better programmers. Just another war they starting. Stop LL, stop USA and we all will have better days.

  227. Carry on anyway. Don’t stop making Emerald. So what if it’s not listed?

Linden Lab got a bit wanting the whole ‘hands on’ with Emerald because your viewer was rapidly becoming more popular than their own. They recognised that you, a bunch of geezers in their bedrooms, had quickly sorted out all of the problems with the viewer – and added to its functionality – in a fraction of the time they had.

In short: You’re an embarrassment to the LL viewer team. You make them look back.

Emerald has transcended the default viewer and LL, i fancy, just don’t like it. So they figure out who the most key members of your team are and then make unreasonable demands knowing it’d put your ship on the rocks for good.

    Fuck ‘em.

The LL viewer is open source and, for this reason, you really don’t need LL’s permission to carry on making it. Sure it wont be listed anymore, but you have a dedicated fanbase of people who know emerald, know its creators and find it, frankly, better than any viewer out there.

    Don’t stop.

  228. would be a great last release…. if it worked…. crashes the second i open the program, login screen shows up for 5 seconds then it crashes before i can even hit the login button lol…. managed to log in one time, but it crashed before anything rezzed on my screen…. and NO this is NOT an issue with my computer, with the previous version i could tri-box emerald on max graphic settings and a 500M draw distance with no lag at all. i’ve always loved emerald viewer, sucks that LL is pulling this shit, but hey, maybe everyone will move to meta7 or another grid of the sort where a version of emerald is what the grid owners use as the viewer of choice

  229. I wish to thank each and every member of the Emerald team publicly for their hard work, and for providing me with what has been my viewer of choice for a very long time now. Thank you so much.

However, I’d also like to thank Phox and Arabella publicly for the demise of Emerald. This didn’t *have* to be the end of Emerald. I expect great things in the future from the *rest* of the Emerald team… you know, the ones who didn’t want Emerald to die at all, and were prepared to work hard to ensure it didn’t.

    • Well I’m glad someone read up on their info, so many people are instantly blaming LL when LL were just protecting their best interests – which is by no means a crime, and their intent was NOT to kill Emerald. LL make money no matter what viewer you use.

      Agreeing with this post.

  230. Guys, I can’t understand why everyone seems so surprised and enraged by this move. Don’t get me wrong I don’t agree with LL in any way. LL is a business and as such, is not to be trusted. Their bottom line is money and always will be. Apparently, at this point in time, they feel their revenues can be increased by somehow sodomizing Emerald because it outshines their steaming pile of monkey crap…but the unfortunate part is…they have every right to.

Their own TPV policies provide exactly what is needed to make requests about who is on the dev team, it’s been posted above so no, I won’t add to my wall of text by reposting it, but the provision is there. They own -everything- in SL and the sooner people figure that out and stop pretending like they’re entitled to something they’re not, things will get better.

I love emerald. Been using it since my first month or so in SL, and will continue to use it, even -after- LL bans it, even if it means spoofing the ident credentials and continuous MAC address changes, but that’s my choice, just as it’s theirs to chose who can connect to their servers and with what software.

Again, LL is a business. Businesses are never to be trusted, no matter who runs them or where they run them. There is no such thing as a respectable businessman because the two terms are mutually exclusive. It’s kinda like calling someone a ‘healthy’ AIDS patient. A business will do anything, legal or otherwise, moral or otherwise to get what they want and this stretches even to the people running businesses in SL. What they apparently want now is complete control over viewers and this is the spearpoint of their attack…so knuckle down folks…it will only get worse from here on out.

    • As a little side note: to the people trying to blame the emerald team. Mutiny’s happen every day in the OS development world. That wasn’t the killing stroke. It was the previous wound that hadn’t healed yet when LL smeared salt into it with their demands…

  231. [...] à jour : sur le blog de Modular Systems Arabella Steadham, responsable de la communication du Projet Emerald, annonce aussi la fin de [...]

  232. I will keep using the last Emerald version till I can’t anymore, whatever the reason. Don’t know if I’d quit SL over it; SL is kind of addictive. But what’s addictive about it is the User Experience, and a large part of -that- is Emerald. Viewer 2 fails to impress me.

I would not be surprised if the atmosphere inside LL is much the same as in the Emerald Dev team. Different people, but the same sorts of people. Emerald was turned to evil purposes, and as a -company- the reasonable thing for Linden Labs would have been to drop Emerald entirely.

But as a group of geeks — well-paid geeks, but geeks nonetheless — the Lindens see Emerald as one hell of a nice product they haven’t managed to match, and something that makes their product sell. So they went ahead and gave the Team a second chance.

And the Team stopped being a Team. Seems to me, if there was in fact DDOS code in Emerald, then it had already stopped being a Team.

    Sic transit gloria mundi.

  233. What I fail to understand is this: Why not obey their childish demands on the surface and still coordinate with the other 3 silently? F*** Linden Labs if they wanna be juvenile. If they wanna make believe they’re almighty, smile and nod and make believe you care.

  234. Frankly I don’t trust LL or the Emerald team. As much as I enjoyed using Emerald, I could not trust it in the end. Perhaps once a hacker, always a hacker. And of course the first thing that came to mind was that Fractured pulled his stunt knowing full well that it would be found out. And if that is the case, then it’s possible that LL influenced that move in one way or another. Either way there is a lost of respect and trust. I hate to see LL basically forcing viewer 2 on us all, but am I surprised? Hell no. Hopefully something better than SL comes along in the near future.

  235. I feel compelled to repost here my reply to the wonderfully stated words of Vaneeesa Blaylock, on August 30, 2010 in this forum

Vaneeesa — U are an articulate, class Lady. U express so clearly the essence of this issue. Emerald was designed by people who actually live in this world, use this world, understand this world, respect this world.

As a 5-year SL resident i have seen a singular pattern of “devolution” in LL, that being their progressive isolation and disassociation from the very community that put them on the map. V2 is the crowning achievement and testimonial proof of the truth of this phenom.

Instead of teaming with the incredibly resource rich, experienced core community, they progressively alienate themselves from it, focusing on exploiting an inexperienced noob community that knows no better. The ultimate expression of this, not just in the recent V2 and LL track housing initiatives, is the fact that a woman realtor here, who made her millions almost exclusively by exploiting the noob community, is tauted in real life magazines as the entrepreneureal wonder of our age. LL’s response to her exploitive tactics? “While what she does may be considered highly unethical behavior, it is not illegal.” A sobering sign of the times.

The immense pool of creative, ingenious, articulate, cultured and savvy core community talent here, goes untapped. To say nothing of the caliber of spirits that journey here in this all too real and wondrous digital world. As long as people like u continue to inhabit this world, we can joyfully say, “We’re gonnah be ok.” Nuff for now. tc

When the Titanic went down, only one lifeboat went back to check for survivors. It would be a sad testimony to our times if this community allows a staff and product such as Emerald, which has captured the minds and hearts of 50% of this community, to sink into oblivion. LL, if ur listening to any of this, how about replying to their SOS and launch some lifeboats instead of abandoning the scene. Again, nuff said.

  236. This sucks! Great viewer, hate LL’s viewer, hmm what now?

  237. Too bad, all good ends eventually.
Because I am not running a business I see no reason why I’d need SL viewer 2, it is biggest crap there ever has been in SL, it is a total failure.
Thank you Emerald project people for your amazing work and as the result of it a long term enjoyment in SL.
Maybe it would be on its place to put this in the public media?
If both sides of this “war” have (more or less) clean papers, neither nor should have anything to fear.

  238. This is upsetting because Emerald does make SL fun. You have so many more options to customize yourself, even with the colored tags above your head. Isn’t that what SL is all about? Exploring ways to show your individualism? Exploring your mind to be creative. Linden Labs, you really should open your eyes,. You encourage people to think outside the box, be inventive, and creative. Emerald has done just that. Why shut them down? That doesn’t make any sense.

  239. well this sucks a big one a great viewer and they run it out of town sounds as if ll says that it is about the residents but it seems now it down to money and envy over their broke ass viewer that won’t load up my av and Emerald that runs like a dream as a business person this seems counter productive to maintaining a fruitful bottom line

  240. all the politics and etc aside, I love Emerald because of the ease of making things more viewable for me. I am sight impaired and was never quite able to get the SL viewer to allow me to adjust it enough. Emerald did and I am very thankful.

  241. This is wrong.

  242. I think comments must be closed, either that or I’m blocked from posting.

  243. [...] it can be back up on the Third Party Viewer list. But not being able to meet these requirements, the Emerald developping team announced that they will no longer be releasing any updates, and that it would only be a matter of time before [...]

  244. Please come back!!!! You have the best viewer out there, please please please work it out with the Lindens! There has to be some common ground somewhere.

  245. It’s a very sad day for all of us. Thank you so very much for all the blood, sweat, and tears the Emerald Dev team has put into making such a wonderful viewer that made us residents sl lives much more enjoyable. You are awesome! I hope that ya’ll don’t give up on developing another viewer. I will continue to use Emerald til they make it impossible for me to log in with the client. When that time comes, I’ll be leaving sl for other grids. No other viewer comes close to making the sl grid as user friendly and fun to use as Emerald. I wish the Emerald Dev team well in all present and future endeavors. I sincerely hope we only have to say goodbye to the Emerald name, and hello to a new viewer the team creates so we can enjoy the sl grid its fullest potential like we have continually enjoyed since Emerald began. *Hugs Emerald Dev Team* I appreciate all the hard work you’ve done for us.

  246. DO NOT SURRENDER! SCREW THE TPV, RENAME THE THE PROJECT! <3

  247. Thanks Emerald team for your work and your time to give at us an excellent viewer. It was sad to hear that news. For now, I change viewer but I keep one eyes on your project.

  248. V.2 … Crap… they wanted to make it all neat with the interface making it look like it’s new, more bugs in it than gran-pappys’ sofa in the flooded basement… with SL and LL Faster is not better.. it just strains their equipment. Jealousy is not the only thing going on there… as for the internals and what went down I cannot comment too far except that… it’s the internet people… corporations have hostile take overs all the time… it’s not on the news… they “merge” with a so called “Better” company that in turn eventually fades the original company out by making the company turn out more rotten product thereby making their own “seem” better… you guys want a mostly free area to create online content… get used to these ideas…
for those saying they would quit if Emerald went down… Fight the power… but whatever… best you can do is send every linden you know one of those >:( cages with the <> tag in it
Oh and… don’t stop…. um what happens to a lindens who mute potential clients? no one knows… but I hear you get banned if you mute them lol My L$2 maybe someone will get tired of hearing it… 50% huh.. cornering the market on L isn’t enough? lol I don’t know… either way

Someone got tired of crap… so they give it to other people and then all that’s left are broken people, broken dreams and everyone smelling like a field full of skunks and burning tires..O.o Nuff said.. cause I said so little already…

  249. I must say, I’m not surprised LL are trying to monopolize the Viewer scene! Healthy competition doesn’t suit them, especially when ‘they’ know their Viewer is inadequate and unpopular! Why should we be shocked..RL businesses do exactly the same..bulldoze and bully smaller Companies into submission too!! That’s what those that are terrified of losing do! Kill the competition and enforce their ideas on the Public..Freedom of choice doesn’t really exist in RL..why on earth would we think it would exist in SL?? LMAO
I can not use Viewer 2 as my physical abilities are such that LL 2.0 is not a viable Viewer for me! All this stupid inability to undock menus..Local chat [and type in the box]..IM’s..has in effect rendered Viewer 2 useless to me!! They dont have built in RLV..its all crap for all and even more so for the physically impaired, making it a bias Viewer!! Not exactly a good advertisement for LL is it? Emerald YOU ROCKED!!! huggggz

  250. since i joined second life i have used there viewers, everyone said change,in the end i tried Emerald, and i truthfully love it i can see my partners eyes for the first time. i have this too say to the lindens you better get this right because im ready to quit this

  251. Damned, I am so sorry for you Emerald guys and girls. This truely sucks and is BAD policy. Thank you for having offered us the best viewer around for several years!!! I hope that there will be a creative solution for you guys, and for us big fans of your work!!

  252. Thank you Emerald… I Started with you almost since the begining, only by accident. From the first moment, though, became clear it was a true gem. I remember it was a thrill everytime i ran into someone with the green tag. It was, back then, like a secret fraternity. Since those earlier days up today, something changed. Suddenly, when arriving to any crowded place in SL it was a like swiming on an green ocean. An EMERALD ocean. So, yes, it’s only natural for LL to deseperatly kill the Emerald project. This is what little people do. LL shame on you! Don’t really know if i will continue in SL if i’m forced to use their moronic and obnoxious miserable viewer. Most important: Thank you to ALL the ones who made Emerald possible

  253. Ya know, as a fervent user of Emerald since its conception… I can honestly say this is the most devastating news I have heard in nearly 6 years of being on Second Life… But… and here is the crunch… Didn’t Arabella and Jessica sit side by side the other day on The Tonight Show in unity? If a hostile attempt really was spearheaded by her then she just screwed the pooch. Nice one… As one of the very first Aussies to be on Second Life I can say if it wasn’t for the general public’s support of our live music venue, I would leave now, without hesitation. I have had enough of this BS. Remember the time we used to get into SL to avoid drama and the fact that maybe we had more control in there than the real world? Well thanks heaps Linden Labs for yet again proving you are nothing but despotic dictators yet again as has been proven so many times in the past, one day you idiots will wake up and no one will be there to be a part of your little world as some other Script Kiddie will come up with a perfectly viable alternative, just like you started off as, so don’t thing you are immune or too intelligent to get screwed over… You are the makers of your own demise. Sine Qua Non.

  254. Ofcourse LL screws up another thing. Whoever said LoserLab, yeah sounds about right. Im no longer paying for premium either. Bastards!
Don’t give up guys:( Don’t make me use viewer 2 D: lol Sad day for emerald as many people said already. Thank u all for the hard work u put into this. Such a shame its gone to waste.

  255. It IS LL! They are looking for a ‘new kind’ of user. Of course I join the ranks of those who will NOT use the LL pathetic viewers:LL COULD make Emerald the official viewer since it has always been public, but the new management too blind to understand.
Heartfelt sympathy from this faithful Emerald user, Thank you for great times.

  256. We all as residents and paying customers of Second Life need to im Linden Labs and demand they keep Emerald as a TPV!!!!!!!

  257. Guys, ya always did a great job developing a viewer that actually is better than linden’s : maybe this is yr only fault. Tnanks 4 your hard work. I’ll miss you.

  258. I sure as hell hope its going to be fatal for SL. Ya know what goes around comes around..and SL will have theirs handed to them too. they keep belittling their own residents…they are going to loose them. they keep lying to their residents, they are going to loose them. and those who leave, more will come? pfft. those that come after this probably wont last long and move to another world…LETS MAKE HISTORY PPL!!!

  259. I am sad that the team could not work it out. Possibly the three developers they wanted gone were the exact three that continued development of Emerald could not do without. Reading all these comments makes me think one thing. If you read LL’s blog, it is apparent that most SL users who care to comment blow things way out of proportion. That exact issue carries over here. Everyone is blowing this up and placing 100% of the blame on LL. In the end, it was not LL fault at all. LL was just enforcing the rules and that had little to do with the fall out. Second, Emerald was a nice viewer but leaps and bounds above LL’s viewer 1 it was not. It rendered faster because it was not using some open source crap that LL uses and the radar and phantom ability were nice. Besides these features, many of which are available in other third party viewers, I fail to see why everyone has such a love affair with Emerald as it was still 99% LL viewer 1.0.

  260. There are still virtual worlds which would welcome the use and utility provided to users which Emerald gave us for so long. I would encourage the team remaining as is to continue its developments to help further these alternate fledgling worlds. 3rd Rock Grid, OSGrid, Openlife, and many more which use the same viewers as the Secondlife product are becoming more viable alternatives day by day.

In fact I intend to move my SL business to one of these alternatives as soon as possible due to the increased stupidity displayed by the pencil-pushers at Linden Labs.

Let this not be an end to this project but a new beginning among multiple worlds. Worlds without the limitations imposed by Linden Labs and its bureaucratic red tape and sneakiness. Leave them behind in the dust they leave for themselves and continue on unabated by their perversion of their and our creations.

I intend on putting in a DMCA request to Linden Labs to block further sales of my own objects to SecondLife Residents as I will be revoking their license to use these items beyond the use granted to residents already in possession of the items in question. As the holder of my IP it is my right to do so, regardless of if Linden Labs likes it or not. I will make sure to monitor their compliance of my requests.

I believe SL is a dying world and has succumb to the greed of those in seats of power at Linden Labs. Do not let Emerald go the way SL is headed, but lead it into newer worlds where the promise is greater and the greedy bureaucrats have not gotten their claws into yet.

  261. The demise of Emerald with Second Life sickens and disgusts me. I just spent two months compiling build classes for Emerald users and now all my efforts are wasted. I will now have to rewrite the whole course.

Linden Lab feels like just another despot domineering the lives of their citizens. Their actions over the past year have left me cold and hostile towards Linden Labs.

I’we been systematically shutting down all my interests in second life except for my job, which I love. The underhand tactics of Linden Lab re Emerald has finished me off. Linden have had huge amounts of my real life cash and they deserve not one penny of it. Hereon, I will be putting my money into less tyrannical pockets and move to a new world. Bye bye Linden, you want a giant sex/chat room, you’re certainly getting it.

  262. Just for the record. I am staying with Emerald until Linden Labs shuts me out. Interestingly it was Jessica who gave me Arabella’s name to contact when I asked her permission to start the group. Well with one of the two ladies gone I guess it is no mystery who will be acknowledged as The Emerald Goddess! Now everything has fallen out so Emerald can run full speed. All this is a sad moment for Second Life as we have all failed to save a good thing and show our unity as one family [Linden Labs included]. Good luck to the Phoenix Team and I am staying with Emerald.

  263. Hmm… Interesting all this. I do wonder though, WHY IN THE HELL do you need to kiss the feet of linden labs when there are OTHER grid projects out there who would LOVE to work with your team and would welcome the influx of commercial and non commercial clients. I for one am about to instruct our major commercial clients to move to a more friendly and constructive environment. Emerald could and should do the same. Pick up your pieces of the ones who are still good for it and move on to greener grass where you WILL be appreciated. Come on folks…. Linden Labs has been chewing their own feet off for months and it appears have finally made it to their kneecaps…I see a company scrambling to fix a project they’ve injured beyond any possible repair at this point. Move to a new project and let them put themselves out of our misery.

  264. thanx to the emerald team for ALL THEY HAVE DONE I think there is of course a large amount of support for Emerald and it seems a shame to waste all the development..Why cant the team carry on and take the time to fix the problems? We can live with a period of time without updates The problem with all the arguments is that if the team give up on development LL will have the perfect excuse to ignore users requirements They will just say well we didn’t close it down it was the dev team that decided to give up so tough I am a musician in Sl and i have found Emerald the only viewer to help me in what i do so please support the dev team and encourage them to continue!!!!

  265. EMERALD DEVS PLEASE MAKE A NEW SECONDLIFE, LIKE EARLIER STATED CALL IT THRIDLIFE OR LINDENFREE LIFE, BUT PLEASE YOU GUYS ARE WAY TO TALENTED AND CREATIVE TO JUST GIVE UP AND WALK AWAY, BUT DOING THAT THE LINDENS WIN, YOU TOOK A STAND AND SAID NO TO BANNING 3 MEMBERS OF YOUR TEAM, KEEP THAT STAND GOING CREATE A NEW WORLD, MY GOD YOU GUYS ALREADY KNOW 50 PERCENT OF SECONDLIFE WOULD GO WITH YOU GUYS, AND PROBABLY MORE THEN THAT…..EMERALD LIFE EVEN SOUNDS GOOD……KEEP THE FAITH GUYS DONT LET THE LINDENS WIN, TAKE THEM OUT AT THE KNEES

  266. This bad news has sickened me in all of my life forms… A second hand one is what now remains. I indeed will too hold on this last life form, as long the emerald blood will keep on streaming.

  267. Is there a reason why the DECENT folks at Emerald can’t just pick up and start their own world? I know many, many people who would gladly liquidate everything in SL and follow them. As SL stands now, without Emerald, there’s really no point in logging in at all.
Here’s a question for the Emerald users: How many of you, who know how to make that work, would actually help the Emerald team to start a new world if they were willing to? :)

  268. [...] [...]

  269. Just let me say that I regard Emerald as the best viewer available. One important factor for me is that I don’t appear to be thrashing my computer quite so hard. SL is graphics heavy, and my fan runs like a maniac, the machine at about 74 degrees, in SL. Snowglobe’s running at about 70 degrees and the new final (? I hope not!) version of Emerald at 62 degrees. This is an important factor. Computers are expensive, and if it runs cooler and preserves the life of the fans, so much better.

The SL viewer id dire. Not user friendly (in the way that Emerald and the similar Snowglobe are), and just so, so badly thought out.

  270. Thank you Emerald team, for spending all those hours for supplying us with the best, most reliable and most complete SL viewer made. One in which the community’s wishes were truly honoured. I have only had much, much joy and ease of use with this viewer.

  271. Thank You! Thnak you for the time, the efforts and for creating the best viewer in SL!
It is very sad to learn the Emerald project will be terminated and i feel very angry as i consider it a deliberate act on LL part. I feel they wanted to kill Emerald.
I can understand the technical reasons that lead LL to ask for a safe 3rd pary viewer. Nothing to object about that of course, it’s in everyone’s interest.
It is my personal feeling though that at LL they resent users being shown what could be done with some commitment and what they are either unable or don’t care enough to create.
No wonder most of the people in SL prefers it to the crippled and poor Sl viewer, no wonder LL might feel jealuos about Emerald viewer.
Whatever the reasons might be, though, i consider it extremely arrogant on LL part to try and decide who can work on what independant team and who can not. This is, in my opinion, unaceptable! It is up the company/team take the actions they think apropriate to prevent members to cause troubles and not to break the TOS. It’s not to LL decide if they can or can not work there.
Anyway, i’m just angry and sad.
I hope that maybe things might be reconsidered. Don’t abandon us to LL mercy!!
And i want once again thank you all for the work you have done during these years and wish you the best luck for the future.

  272. OK. Listen up now. This is what we do now. We recruit more and more people onto Emerald make the user base up to say 70%. Then we all send out the message that we will NOT use any other viewer to log into SL. SO Linden have a choice, switch off and lose 70% of their memebers or relent and begin talks with the Emerald team again to resolve things.
So all of you that can write a group notice out there. Go back and write one begining the recruitment now, ask all your members to download and use Emerald from today.
This can work if we stand strong and all together with one voice.

  273. this is an amazing viewer… its gonna be hard without it :/

  274. Emerald Viewer is now insignificant! The Phoenix Viewer is there!

    • Wrong, wrong, wrong.
This is not a forum for free advertising for possibly corrupted viewers. The so called “lead dev” made her own ripper viewer some time back, passed it around friends and was caught openly copybotting. Her viewer was named Catnip – just a small release for select thieves. Would you really trust such a dev? Seems she has standards for herself, but another set by wich she judges people a lot smarter than herself. I doubt she is honest enough to put that on any of her own posts, so in the interest of ‘transparency’ I shall do it for her :)

  275. So you give up like that?!
    What a shame…

You’re the ones who made the best viewer for me…
    None have what emerald have…

If you really try to… I’m sure you can find a way to keep your team..

I tried many other viewer… They all suxx!!
Even the SL2 suxx.. worse than any other viewer…

    SL without Emerald… I stop…

  276. Thank you all who made Emerald.
    No Emerald – No me
and i wonder how many me there are

  277. This is BULL SHIT !!!!!!! Who the F#*CK do they thank they r ? I LOVE EMERALD !!!!! No one log in Monday September 6th 2010 . I KNOW I WILL NOT !!!!!! I will not be back if they do this.

  278. Yay censorship, I have four posts saying:

    http://jessicalyons.wordpress.com/
Read Jessica’s blog it explains a lot, And it won’t have copybotters on the team.

that are still set to “awaiting moderation” for the last week. Hopefully this one will get passed through.

  279. Riot. All we need is an e-riot! Mass Emerald members stop buying L from these people, and they will feel the choke!

  280. Lindens have never exhibited anything but disdain for their users. Don’t waste your breath trying to change anything in SL. I quit long ago treating SL like anything but a triviality. We need to get one of the alternatives to critical mass where it will replace the less able Second Life. Been a long time since I owned land, a joke, or bought Lindens. I’ll NEVER give them another nickel….

  281. The Phoenix Viewer is wonderful…as if Emerald never left…except maybe the drama is gone, hopefully forever.

  282. I have not been in SL for as long as most of you , but for as long as i’ve been logged into sl i stopped using there viewer 2 due to the fact in hasn’t the expertise to compete with the emerald team and there viewer this is very unperfessional buisness wise nor respectful to the people world wide, weather they pay or not , something has to be done , are we paying customers or not ,, CONSUMER PROTECTION AGENCY may be able to do something , i feel this is no longer a emerald fight but its the peoples fight and if we dont do something then we didnt care anyways, dont blame emerald for giving up blame ourselves also for giving up

  283. I have been a resident in SL since 2006. I have put up with TP’s where my hair & even pumps arrived up my ass. But what I have seen is LL are slowly but surely fucking up their “product”. As a premium member I will hope to find an alternative (Blue Mars or wherever) and LL can go screw themselves. I spend maybe $60-80 USD amonth inworld & I will spend that elsewhere.

Thank you for the Emerald browser which has made life far more tolerable and enjoyable. Good luck for the future.

  284. 6 premium alts reduced to basic. More to come. Not paying to use viewer 2 :(

  285. I just wanted to say, Thank You Emerald team for all your hard work on this, you guys -really- have been appreciated by the users of SL, builders, photographers, and just normal users, we’ve all enjoyed the experience you have brought to us and all the time and effort you put into making that experience even better. It really does sadden me that you have been chased off by the lab like this, I hope you guys will come back one day and rebuild what has been destroyed even better under a new name, cause you guys were the only ones that actually listened to the people of SL.

  286. ok LISTEN UP EMERALD TEAM!!!! STRAP YA BOOTS UP! LOAD YOUR TOOL BELTS! SUIT UP!!! THIS IS A BUMP IN THE ROAD! GET OVER IT! REVAMP! NOT REWIND!!! REINVENT NOT LINGER OVER SPILLED MILK! OH I KNOW ITS A LOT OF MILK BUT GUESS WHAT! IT WILL CLEAN UP JUST AS WELL AS A LITTLE BIT! SO DRY YOUR EYES, WIPE YOUR NOSE, GET OVER BEING PISSED! SOMETIMES THE BEST REVENGE ISNT WHAT YOU SAY ITS WHAT YOU DO! AND ITS HOW WELL YOU PERSEVERE! I’LL BE EXPECTING WORD IN THE NEAR FUTURE OF THE “DIAMOND PROJECT” OR THE “RUBY PROJECT” OR HELL THE “STONEWALL PROJECT! IDK WHAT THE HELL YOU NAME IT! JUST BRING IT BACK! IF LL WOULD WAKE UP AND READ SOME SHIT! THEY’D KNOW WHAT THE DEAL IS! AND THEY’D EMBRACE THE DEVS AND BRING THEM ON BOARD. signs… oh well, im not giving up… hope is still alive amongst the viewers. there will always be haters. the question is not will you live through this… its how well you will live through it ??? chin up guys!

  287. they seem to do this alot when one is successful in SL. I dont understand the ego and the need for such absolute power that the lindens have. I bet they are republicans.

  288. LINDEN: You own the money that is made from thin air.

Why must you crush others who don’t? Why squash innovation? My whole pull to this game, and how I got many others into it, was that it was like a visual internet. Unlimited possibilities. Don’t do this.

  289. I run Emerald with a computer that has 2 260s in SLI format and 8 gigs of ram behind it on a quad core (Yes I built it for Windows Vista then moved to Windows 7) But even when I ran LL’s 2.0 vs Emerald’s 1636 my computer didn’t have to dedicate so much resorces to the viewer. Trust me was running as slow as molassas in winter time with 2.0 I’d be lucky to break 40fps on a empty sim. With 1636 in SLI I spiked at 140fps on the same sim. Should speak for its self there. I don’t care if it’s not on the TPV page. I say keep emerald going. and reprogram the files they are talking about and get them to double thier speed. Screw LL. If they want to say anything I take it everyone would be willing to deleate thier accounts. I know I’m a old account and willing to make a promice that I’ll keep to make sure Emerald gets back onto the TPV page. Nymph Goodliffe, Tank Fisher, Nymph Cobalt -yes these are all my alts I’ll delete these all if emerald goes bye bye. -.- I don’t make threats I make promices…..

  290. they will have to pull me away from emerald kicking and screaming before i will go to any thing else …fuk em

  291. Dear Emerald Team,

Since I heard of the Emerald Viewer I used it and I think its such a huge impreovement to the other viewers. I tried several viewers and think its a shame Emerald cant cantinue as an official viewer. LL should look closer to what happened and not blame the entire Emerald Team.
Me, as a user of Emerald, can “sadly” only say many thx to the team and all their efforts made!
I really hope something still can be done………and if so…then I am yours. :)

    Sincerely, CitizenThe Auer.

  292. Too bad it ends like that … Emerald viewer is so rich of talented features. i just wondered how come lineden labs have not developed their viewer that way or ask for a real partnership wiht emerald team.

  293. In a time of bad Economy and lives pushed to high levels of stress and dispair…. It seems that LL is oblivious to this and Greed and arrogance.. the same ingredients of a disease that has created this world wide nose dive has infected a selfish, immature element thats called Linden Labs. The symptoms are fatal in the End……

  294. If Linden would only read the fanfare that Emerald has, you would think that if they couldn’t beat them, they should join them. I learned today that half of the logins in SL are through Emerald, so why not advertise Emerald to those who don’t have it? The SL viewer is slow, and honestly doesn’t work for me. It’s been said that there are alternatives to SL, and I would go out and find them if I had to go back to the SL viewer. If LL honestly thinks killing Emerald won’t kill their user base, they are partially right. I’m sure there are some who would complain heavily and then gripe about the SL viewer, but still use it. I know, for one, that I would pull my real money and real time from LL and invest it elsewhere.

  295. “………….They want me to use WHAT?!……… I thought we had that all resolved!!??”
Looks in horror and with wary disbelief at the Lindens, then hugs her Emerald Viewer tight to her chest muttering soothingly “It’s ok, nobody is going to take you away from me honey.” Coos lovingly and purrs softly and resolutely, “If those bad Lindens what to take you away from me, then we are just going to have to go to another World.”
Runs protectively away with her Emerald Viewer calling back to the Lindens. ”Highly encouraging me to use your viewer is like asking me to go round real life with a diaper on my head. I ‘could’ do it, but it is quite ineffectual and doesn’t look all that good!”
Shakes her head and thinks sl is no different from rl, always some little tin gods running round in their Kingdom shouting “OFF WITH THEIR HEADS” and insisting the world is flat..,,pfffft.
    (But it is their kingdom)

  296. Arabella — or should I say Fractured — you cheeky little monkey! No money in creating Emerald, eh? This was your plan all along: Wait until you had 50% of SL users hooked, then purposefully cause the Emerald demise, then start your own grid so you COULD make money and not have LL over your heads. And your users are falling for it hook, line and sinker. You’re crazy! Crazy like a Phox. ;)

    • I have tried other grids……No going there again. You don’t have your total game there. Just amother world and no friends, cuz they stayed at SL

    • Mac, it is unfair that you accuse Arabella this way. DMCA has put Second Life into an evolutionary bind. Once fixed things will flow.

  297. Why should Emerald stop or disapear? If LL don’t want it for whatever strange reason, users love it and would continue to use it if it worked as well with other grids such as Reaction Grid and OSGrid

  298. Please do not give up, must to be something else what could be done.
LL is persistent in his not to allow the return of Emerald, but you from modularsystems, you should try everything what is possible. To return Emerald on place he belongs, on the position of the leading viewer. Because all of people who can not imagine playing SL
on the other viewer. I believe how you are disappointed after everything you’ve worked for all of us who love Emerald, to be returned to you in that way. Please once again do not give up, be persistent from LL. Do not let because all of us, Emerald not may to stay only in our memories.
From this, we must come out happy, not disappointed.
    Emerald must to be alive.

  299. Be it what it may…..LL’s fault….Emerald’s fault, in the end it don’t matter. It is over and done with. If the Emerald team brings out another viewer, most will change to it. If they don’t they will use what they have downloaded now until if or when LL blocks it. We can’t change it, we can either play the game or move on. I will not leave SL because I have friends there and I don’t have to go on hunts for gorgons or whatever.I can talk with my friends, go shopping or whatever it has to offer. Alot of us don’t play the rpg games. So this is a place we are familar with and will stay.
I know we all need the chance to vent..we would not be human if we didn’t, and this is the time and you are provided the blog to do this. In the end…you will return to SL,….you will continue with your life ….and you will always have friends and family in game that you would not have otherwise, ,,or you would not be here.

  300. Your internal feuds have gotten tiresome. People loved the viewer because Emerald was the best one out there bar none for most of us. We loved you guys because you worked tirelessly on making a great viewer. Something went wrong along the way though and egos or personalities or foolish actions caused you folks to get in trouble with LL and to fight amongst yourselves. I am using the Phoenix Viewer because it is basically the Emerald Viewer and because I trust that it will work properly and not be banned. I don’t really give a crap about whether you think it is appropriate to mention the Phoenix Viewer in your forum. Sorry you seem unable to stand the heat but really you all brought his upon yourselves. I sincerely hope you get it sorted out and I sincerely hope that you all go back to making great viewers. I just don’t think that the drama does any of you any good whatsoever. I think the Lindens usually suck too but you have to learn to deal with them because it is their show. Good luck and I mean that sincerely–I hope the best for you all.

  301. Can we have an Emerald User Group? Can I start one without being legally in hot soup?

  302. I’m still using an older version of emerald and want to thank you for the long run we had together. I will not move to another viewer until absolutely required under threat of being removed from SL.

  303. i just discovered the hole thing that L.L. has done… and i only weeks ago was given the chance to try emerald for the first time… i had herd about it from time to time and being a furry in SL found the program to be smooth, fast, crisp and extremely functional. i for the first time in 3 years was happy with SL as a hole sim… emerald shocked me in so many ways that i for the first time Evin understood how to billed the lands around me… with ease… it was a existing program T.P.V. …

but now i find that the best T.P.V. i have used to date has been closd down for no real reson other then the crapy V.2 was getting mass regection…

now don’t get me wrong i happy give any viewer a fare try SL V.1 was OK… but was only for when you start in SL… V.2 had some good ideas to it but had a hell of a lot of problems to it. with its incredibly slow loding times bugs and repeating errors dispite beeing on a fast or slow computer or laptop… SL was nerly unplayable… so i started looking around for other T.P.V. and found emerald… again suggested to me through the furry comunity promissing beater lode time and more place setings so i could actuly where my tale without having to spend countless houers fixing it so it looked more natural… i espeshely hated how in V.2 i always had to agust parts and equipment to placess not ment for the object at hand… like … wings… if i had spiks atached to the spine i would have to atach the wings to the hed or neck … and editing it alot until it looked natrul to the avy… with emerald i didnot have to wory about that at all and found that the program was the best interface i have found to date… i wont go back to V.2 or V.1 or any viewer from L.L. there to buggy and slow…

L.L. you gave up a real goldmine by fighting the emerald teem if you only embraced them a emerald V.3 might have been realest in the future and would have been Evin grater… but you dropped the largest online ball i have seen in years… and that includes the stock-market… hell almost 85% of the SL community uses SL for jobs and work advantages in RL and with emerald gone the businesses will dry up or move further away from L.L.’s grasp… in short you lost bu making this move… and all of SL knows it…

“September 6th” will be long remembered in SL as the day that L.L. went to far and angered more then half of there network and business community by terminating the emerald project by force… and loosing all faith and respect in the community over all…

and to emerald… never give in or give up… we as the emerald community will never give up on you…

  304. Linden Labs killed this viewer :( And they shot in their own foot once again by doing so. Very clever LL.

  305. Are you morons seriously downgrading your accounts and threatening to leave simply because LL did the responsible thing and got rid of a viewer who’s developers are bunch of crooks and break policy? They should have been banned a long time ago! You morons also realize V2 ISN’T YOUR ONLY OTHER CHOICE, there’s already viewers up now that plan to be on the TPV list that are forks of emerald and exactly the same as emerald in every way or BETTER, and without the malicious code. Go use one of them and quit your crying. If you’d leave SL simply because you can’t cling to your stupid emerald anymore then frankly good riddance, who needs to interact with brainless sheep who don’t know how to do any research.

  306. Well V you seem to have done the research , why don’t you share it with us? Epecially since your calling people idiots, copybotters and crooks!

  307. You think that’s bad, I just got a 403 error message over at the Alphaville Herald which insists its modified my internet broswer’s php configuration. Not only that, but two other people I am known to associate with have got it too.

I’ve never got that kind of a message at modular systems. I guess they’ve just run out of answers and have shut off comments with the exception of a few trusted lackeys. Do excuse me if I post my response here to Nelson’s comments over at http://alphavilleherald.com/2010/08/emerald-in-disgrace-philip-linden-warns-against-malicious-viewer.html

Amazing, the “tldr” brigade must be out mooning at other threads. Cool, maybe we can hash this out uninterrupted for a change. Or maybe you can call them in after this reply and save yourself any more embarrasing tap-outs along the lines of “I wish I understood whut it is you are saying.”

To start, you did not bother to “teach” me anything; you got in my face over a comment I made to General Drama in another thread with a tenuous and tangential remonstration over the minutae of why Emerald was so evil. When called upon to justify it, you stumbled and wavered and pretty much got so badly stomped for your troubles that instead of giving it the good old college try, you started screeching “fangirl” and complaining that I kept responding to your replies. Nellie my boy, I am NOT in the habit of accepting everything blindly simply because someone else says it is so.

I question in order to understand for myself. And I certainly don’t limit it to one side of an argument, I’m perfectly happy to question ALL sides of an argument in order to obtain a fuller appreciation of a situation, even though it might be purely academic interest on my part, as is the case with this incessant freenis-waving over Emerald and anything remotely connected with it. For the most part I am content to do this in-camera. You’ve brought it to me in open forum, so be it – I have no problem with tackling you or anyone else in formal argument on the topic at hand and it scarcely matters to me if it takes place out in the open or in IM.

Your argument has been weak and unconvincing for the most part. You have shifted and morphed your attacks as each has had its weaknesses exposed. A classic case in point is the DDoS issue, calling the word of an IT technician of 25 years experience in question, attempting to downplay a one year old dictionary’s relevance, first with an open source wikipedia entry that while possibly more recent could have been contributed by anybody, then with a tiny extract from a 13 year old CERT definition which even if we discount the disclaimer that its currentness has not been maintained, if read in toto it smashes your claim to dust anyway.

I don’t mind so much. These little exercises in discussion amuse me and keep my mind active. But not when their principle proponents throw in the towel repeatedly as you have done. Simply declaring me a fangirl based on the fact I demand comprehensive and conclusive proof to support your arguments does not cut the mustard. I suspect you already know this and don’t care. You are after all amongst friends here who are prepared to pat you on the back, forgiving you for your errors of logic while being highly critical of any contrary opinion. And of course there’s the infamous tl;dr cries when the aforementioned contrary opinion gets so comprehensive it leaves no room for manouvering, along with your bluster regarding ape-like intellects.

I got more of a comprehensive insight out of 20 minutes of discussion with Phox and what little I observed of being a beta tester for the only client that afforded me the kinds of access to the grid as required to make my Second Life “all it is supposed to be”. The one overriding impression I get from you is ironically the exact same thing you are so keen to lay at my door. Namely that you are not interested in hearing an opposing opinion and refuse to be swayed from your course of destroying Emerald entirely, though to be fair I have noticed a tempering of your attitude towards its devs as they move on to other products, even if you aren’t quite prepared to observe the results first hand.

I will of course accept your implied retraction of your “makes less sense than before” comment earlier. I honestly think you did read it as it was intended and grammar-lamed me for the sake of obfuscation, but only you would know that for sure and I doubt you’d admit to it. All I will tell you is that IF I was trolling, then I must have been doing a damn fine job of it to keep you coming back time and time again without the need to mention you, even indirectly. I can point to two threads where after an absence of a week I have returned only to find you yapping at my heels without my having mentioned you once. As a matter of fact, my comment to General Drama which started your lusty responses to my posts didn’t mention you either.

Be that as it may, you inquired of me what I was talking about in regards to the llkdu.dll being used in third party viewers, before going on to explain that breach of the Kakadu licensing conditions is to all intents and purposes unenforceable. This may or may not be true and I trust to have that satisfied by Linden Labs actions in the fullness of time. However I cannot repress the sneer on my face to watch people like yourself pussyfooting about what is essentially an open invitation by a number of third party clients to invite their users to engage in the misappropriation and unlicensed use of software intended for a particular client. I find it even more incredible that after having slammed a client which actually bothered to obtain a licensed copy of the aforementioned software for the use of thier clients you would essentially turn a blind eye to the practice of recommending (and I understand even using) clients which even go as far as to provide copies of the software that have NOT been licensed to them as part of their releases. I won’t even bother to get into how this violates the GPL. Suffice to say, it is every bit as illegal as leeching bandwidth off a hackers website. You can argue degree of culpability until you are blue in the face, it still wont change the fact that it is ILLEGAL.

Moving on to the voice issue. I’m happy to hear you’ve no problems with voice on Ascent. Previously I’ve heard complaint from no less than three people who opined that audio, video and voicechat were denied them in Ascent, two of these people who otherwise made good use of voicechat under both LL clients and TPVs. If they choose to vouch for this, that is their affair and I fail to see how screenshots will lend any further creedence to their story. Neither will its absence confer any insight to my sanity or lack thereof, though if it could proce to my detriment, then at least we’ll all have the satisfaction of knowing you got stomped, not just by a woman, but a barking mad one to boot.

I have numerous clients installed on my system (including several Emerald versions, Emergence, and Phoenix, but only on a virtual machine). Ascent just happens to be the one I enjoy using and trusting the most. I have tried most reputable public clients.

“Aure you sure that’s the only reason?”

    Yes, I “aum” pretty sure.

“Naw, don’t answer that, I really don’t care to know.”

Oh, sorry. Hey, wait a second, isn’t that the question you were pestering for me to answer a bit later?

“Let me guess, I’m going to have to drag an admission from you that you’re too frightened Fractured might hack your Vivox if you use voice?”

I personally don’t give a shit. If he wants to listen to me talk, well, that’s pretty creepy. If he wants to inject himself into my conversation, well, that’s great, but I would just mute him anyways.

Interesting claim to make, that you would mute him. Because if I read the article concerned correctly, it would appear that a miscreant could insert themselves into a conversation without any of the parties knowing. This would presume their name would not appear on the active chatters list, which in turn presumes that even if they did start talking, you’d have no way of turning their voice off. And while I haven’t had occasion to mute anyone in my entire SL, I would imagine that Vivox (third party software is it not?) could not actually be influenced by any in-world commands if the users themselves are not being tracked by a client. Even if it were otherwise, all it would take is one person monitoring on speaker and you’d be hearing Fractured’s echo everytime they keyed their mic.

Besides, claims of muting I generally regard as people crying wolf. It has been my experiene that most people who loudly announce they’ve muted or ignored someone are doing so only in the hopes it will make the other person stop talking about them… and generally speaking they are listening keenly to see if that does in actual fact happen. I’ve also heard people just as loudly announce they are un-muting people when the offending conversation continues unabated! *laughs*

    - “That would make your viewer’s inability to represent it as a feature, not a bug, yes?”

    - “Emerald revealing your installation directory so helpful developers can inform you that you’re using an out-of-date version is also a feature, right?”

Irrelevant to my question, which by your claim that you have in fact access to voice makes my question also irrelevant, at least as far as you’re concerned. Still, I have heard many excuses and accusations as to why a licensed copy of an encrypted file should/should not be used and its a little late in the day for you to be legitimising Emerald’s usage of it when your time might be better spent castigating the practice of those other clients which would either obtain it illegally or issue explicit instructions on how users might do so, lest you be seen as a one-eyed hypocrite.

    - “It’s hard to read the scribblings of an illiterate, brainwashed moron.”

I manage perfectly well reading you, don’t I?

    - “And I had to ask you three times before it seeped into your reptilian brain that I was asking you something you STILL haven’t answered. Lets check, shall we?”

    - “Welp, here’s your answer. Apparently it was too difficult for you to actually do any research (although, this doesn’t really surprise me, given your track record of minimal correct statements), so you had to wait for my answer, which you will most likely attempt to dispute.”

Actually, if you bother to read (like really read, not just wobble your head in front of the screen like a demented babboon searching for bananas) you might notice you’ve not only provided me with an answer, but also that I have given you the benefit of the doubt.

    - “You know, I’m beginning to think you’re nothing but a loudmouthed troll. Can you assure me this is not the case?”

    - “Sorry, I can’t. It’s what I do.”

Well at least you admit it. I’ve been told this place is rife with them (and not just by various members of Emerald either) though I never expected one to actually admit they were trolling. There goes any authenticity to your claims of actually trying to teach me anything I guess.

    - “I guess I can ask them of the owner of the Ascent client, he seemed like a personable enough chap when I talked to him.”

    - “Wow, now that would be a pretty good idea. Something actually intelligent and reasoned came from your lips! Stop the press! Too bad you were probably being sarcastic.”

I guess only I will ever really know that, however much you might pretend to have an inside track on it.

    - “Certainly he wasn’t getting about with LLC Fraudular Systems in his groups, but then neither I understand (to the mirth of many) are you these days. Why IS that I wonder?”

    - “I still don’t understand where people get this crack-pot idea that it’s particularly a bad thing. I only joined the group (as I did with many Emerald newsfeeds) to stay informed on up-to-the-minute happenings for my blog. Oh, that’s right, I keep forgetting I’m talking to a sub-ape who doesn’t understand the meaning behind “My groups are hidden. kthxbai”

Except that it wasn’t hidden until I started clobbering you for it. It was out there in plain view for ALL to see, otherwise how would my cursory research into who you are yielded such knowledge? You might like to take that on board for the next time you start badgering total strangers in public places only to have them turn around and kick you in the happysacs for inadvertantly wearing your heart on your sleeve.

And I did get a giggle out of watching you yank it out of the limelight, as did a few of my friends. Childish perhaps, but still less so than the rabid insistence of going into what amounts to a social setting and effetively walling every last bit of yourself off from it. Still, you admit to being a troll, a rather antisocial endeavour its true but it does explain perfectly why you would seek to hide as much as you can and go completely psycho over vague datamines from selected groups, amongst other things.

    - “You do realise of course that I am going to keep responding for pretty much as long as you do, yes?”

    - “Yeah, it boggles my mind why either of us actually continue to fight over this, because Emerald has obviously already lost.”

I’m responding to someone who thought it important enough to bring it to my attention in the first place. Whuts your excuse?

I will be back to read it, I promise. I cannot tell you when, since having two active social lives tends to eat into my day, but you can rest assured I’ll look you up on my return. Now that I know you are a troll, I’ll also know to take your claims of wanting to teach anyone with a grain of chickensalt.

Still, I find myself coming back to earlier questions of mine that have remained unanswered, like “what will you do when you no longer have Emerald to kick around Mr Fraudular Systems?” I think I can answer that with “nag the hell out of people I can’t beat while others go the reach around on me of course Jocelyn”. You don’t mind me answering for you Nellie?

To Doctor Yootz, its Nellie’s null values being argued. My interest is purely academic and exists only because he decided to put it out there in the first place.

And I still believe he owes Arabella an apology and know full well he hasn’t the guts to stand up and make it. He’s just not got that courage, though he does have you.

    kisses

Especially to the person who saw fit to “disable my php configuration”. You know who you are. ;)

    http://img834.imageshack.us/img834/9405/bannedalphaville.jpg

Be it known that my “php configuration” has never been in question, not until I set foot in here and so comprehensively destroyed all opposing argument. Leaving the members no other recourse than to reach for the banhammer. Or the internal configuration of my computer as the ban page infers, though I no more believe the Herald has that capability any more that Emerald did. Even if I *am* reliably informed that the Herald is a haven for the PN and WU crowds.

Your character is defined well in the words “fairly unbalanced”. May this stand as a testament to those who would complain about being banned, yet not be above being banned themselves.

@ Nelson – I would invite you to continue this discussion in-world if you are so inclined, though I will understand if the administrative silencing meets with your approval. Too bad if so.

    Jocey :P~~~

    • Wow, whut do you know? The Alphaville reports of deactivating my php settings have been grossly exaggerated. Whoda thunk it?

Cretins think they can silence me. Good luck.

      • Oh, and a couple of minor grammatical errors in there… only a complete goon with weak or no argument would seek to highlight them

  308. I hope you realize there’s already viewers out there that are exactly the same as emerald, or better, if you really think emerald and 2.0 are your only choices, then good riddance to idiots who cling to emerald without doing any research.

    Better than Emerald, how?

  309. I used to feel respect for the Lindens, i dont anymore. One thing is to make sure a TPV is safe, another is trying to take control of others work and organization. It wouldnt surprise me now if they do soemthign to their code and make us all Emerald users, start crashing all over and FORCE us too to quit. They should better focus in fixing their inventory problem, cause i know many people cant get their inventories fully loaded for months, including me, and there is no power on earth to make them fix this, and i am talkign of people still using their 1.23 viewer. So why not cleaning first their own house before tryign to make others clean theirs?.

  310. I believe the Emerald team should start anew from fresh New Viewer, New name, New ideals. i don’t care if people tell me im stupid or any thing else but Emerald suited my needs and i dont think a high profiting organization like LL should be the ones choosing weather to close down the project i say leave it to the people Democracy is the foundation of the USA and im a Canadian apparently who knows its the people at power not the corporations.

  311. I have tried my best to learn the utterly impossible Viewer 2.0… And, I keep returning to Emerald when I need to get something done. For example; where in the hell are the personal “classified” listings on the profile?

Viewer 2.0 is simply the MOST confusing piece of work… And, I have an investment in Second Life but alas, I cannot use the Viewer 2.0..

As “Inworldz” and “Meta7″ gain inpopularity and their sophistication, I predict the end of Linden Labs.. Not unlike the end of Enron.. Arrogance, narcissism, egocentricity has been the bane of many companies.

Until they begin to listen to their viewers and clients, it will be a slow downslide – after all, remember the Romans died at the hands of the barbarians; they were too busy resting on their laurels and their asses…

    Sorry to see Emerald’s demise…!

  312. Well i tried the latest version… the comment was that the viewer was not allowed to connect to second life . i’m jus a end user .. i loved that viewer since i discovered it . it is a shame that all these skills and features are lost.
I do not know anyone of the team members but i deeply thank you all for the pleasure i got using that viewer in SL.

  313. I can’t even use SL viewer 2 I’ve been using Emerald all this time because I have a 10.4.10 Mac PowerPC :(

  314. Emerald was great, diverse entity on its own. I have taught many new Second Life members how to use Second Life with this viewer. Members who other wise would have been as frustrated and annoyed as I had been when I first started. I think If LL wants our money they should find a way to work with this group of people who have spent many long hours to develop a product to please the users, not the creators of Second Life. Business 101″the customer is always right” Taking away an option that 50 percent of users advocate by logging in on a regualr basis is not good business period. (on a side note..I logged in on a basic SL viewer today and I can not get anything to work..my avi is a cloud regarless of the many basic tricks to remedy this it continues to be an issue.) Great game LL now it sucks..thanks

  315. hey let me know how i can help to bring back emerald thanks the viewer was so cool.

  316. so long and thanks for all the fish!

  317. TGhere is something called anti trust laws that seem linden Labs are breaking. Its the same thing that Intel (Pentium) did to AMD (advanced Micrc Devices) Chip maker. and the same thing what Microsoft did back in the 90`s to crush there competitors and its something emerald should look into.

  318. Without Emerald, I think I’ll have to quit SL. SL’s viewer is complicated; last time I tried to use it huds filled almost the entire screen and I could see nothing else! I’ll hang on to Emerald as long as I can…..

  319. First, in the end, thanks 4 the viewer.
Life continuous, second or not… and new horizons are available to the next best viewer. I bet it will not be a LL one…
    C u 4 ever

  320. Why not continue emerald viewer releases but cut off the second life’s protocoal, make it an optional viewer for other grids only not related to second life?

  321. I don’t usually condone angry ranting comments but in this case, I completely agree with this post.

  322. Linden Labs handed the showel pretty eagerly. They even threw it at Emerald’s face when it was trying to get out of the dig.
And someone in Emerald Team was putting lead bars in their backpack.

  323. In additon to faxing them, I’ve just downgraded my premium accounts, and assuming that this doesn’t change will no longer be logging in at all, which means they lose the premium money AND the lindens I have to buy to pay tier. Maybe not a lot to them, but if enough of us withdraw money that is what they see. Lost revenue.

  324. It’s too bad that Linden Labs won’t care if a few people downgrade, they will still get a lot of money from naive users. I downgraded to basic a couple months ago for bad service to begin with, no support in issues I needed fixed. I stopped buying Linden money as well. Their loss, but they won’t care.

  325. It isn’t hard. I haven’t bought lindens in months and now I find myself without the will to even go shopping.Considering this time yesterday I was making plans to go shopping for an outfit for a dress for my forthoming wedding (along with a pile of other accoutrements for it)that’s quite the effect this latest development has had and its going to take a lot to reverse it.

I’m so sorry for those talented creators who are still knocking their hearts out in the face of all this. I feel like they and I have been systematically bullied out of what we love so much and for nothing better than the chopping down of a tall poppy for making the 2.0 look like the weed it was.

  326. An for every one of you that leave 10 will come in an take your place. As for the ones saying I will leave if emerald gets removed well it has it was a matter of time is all… As for the ones saying we will leave all you are doing is hurting yourself. As for the Emerald team tryn to make LL the bad guys in all of this well there is alot of TPV viewers that are able to comply with the rules way can’t they ? an one more note it was THEM not LL that caused this whole shit storm.

  327. Emerald team, why are my comments perpetually “awaiting moderation”?
You’re okay with Chiz Okey making a Nazi reference, but not okay with me saying that Nazi references are outrageous? Come on guys, really?

  328. @ James: I will try to explain: Many folk are not THAT committed to involvement in SL. Emerald was a lot better at providing the authentic SL expoerience to those with less than top-notch computers – that was the beauty of EMKDU.dll.
No one in their right mind would call the Emerald Dev formely called “almost anything” anything other than a stupoid selfish criminal, but LL’s attitude to the remaining team and their intent to cripple Emerald (make no mistake ANY viewer without EMKDU.dll and LLKDU.dll is crippled)was heavy-handed and counter-productive. It is the implications for the future of all TPVs that is the most worrying to me. Today it is Emerald, tomorrow who knows? To the non-committed user this sends out very bad vibes ans , I’m sorry, I think it will be very bad for LL in the short-to-medium term, and maybe fatal to SL in the long term. As for 10 coming in for every one leaving – that is just plain nonsense.

  329. You’re wrong. I mean, no let me rephrase that. You’re wrong that the emerald viewer made Second Life good for people with older computers. It did that, but let’s be frank. I have a gaming computer. It’s not top of the line, but I play Dragon Age- a very demanding game, on the high settings… I can play most games on very high settings. But V2? It barely runs. It takes MINUTES to load nothing but my own avatar while I stand in the middle of an empty sime, it’s disgusting. Emerald made the game functional for ALL users. Second Life has a great deal of resource use problems, which can make even a computer on the bleeding edge of technology cry- this was addressed by Emerald. If I have to go back to that molassess-slow experience I had before Emerald, I’m gone. This whole ordeal is absurd.

  330. I completely agree. V2 makes the SL experience one not worth having. Modular Systems clearly displayed what happens when brilliant creative minds come together behind one goal. On the other end LL has shown how panicky a weak company can be when their efforts are so unsuccessful.

  331. I hope you realize there’s already viewers out there that are exactly the same as emerald, or better, if you really think emerald and 2.0 are your only choices, then good riddance to idiots who cling to emerald without doing any research.

  332. You’re joking right? LL has been tolerating Emerald’s BS for a long time now even having meetings with the devs even long after they knew the devs were a bunch of copybotters and crooks.
