Dear Linden Lab…
Dear Lindenlab,
I read the news today, oh boy.
I wonder at why you think your re-defining of the word ‘transparency’ is such a good thing, as it certainly has nothing to do with honesty or integrity. It is a muddy flim of half truths, conniving and deception. I wonder why you have not told the users of Secondlife (50% of whom were Emerald users, by your own statistics) that the new approved TPVs are created by former griefers that you hounded out of secondlife, lock, stock and barrel.
I wonder why you have not announced that Ascent is simply a new name for Interia + nano, two viewers designed to steal passwords and make content theft so much easier. I wonder why you are happy for the devs to be on that team, when you specifically named them to us as not trustworthy and to never be on the Emerald Team. This was during the time you felt you had the right to dictate who should be on TPV teams. Obviously you have self corrupted your own publicly announced standards.
I am also curious as to why you think the so-called ‘lead dev’ on the Phoenix team is trustworthy, when you know damned well she made her own viewer based on emerald but with permission checks removed. Oh wait – that was only distributed to friends so was ok. But she lied. Your two targets on the Emerald Team never lied about what they had done, either to you or the public.
And I assume with your all knowing abilities that you are perfectly aware of the relationship of the 3rd-class devs on the Emergence team with the group you mass banned some months back. Check who funds them.
You know full well that the very same people who hacked into emerald webservers and wrote griefer viewers are listed as compliant and in the newly announced TPVD. So much for your worthless standard of ethics. You are also fully aware that the last emerald release, 2600 was FULLY compliant with the TPV set standards – emkdu is NOT in violation with the GPL and we removed the encoding as required. We did however have the correct distribution licensing from the owner of KDU, something that lindenlab forgot to get themselves. Two of your chosen targets on the dev team left, the 3rd was not “voted off” (do you really think this is some sort of a game??) yet you still say the most popular viewer on the grid is non compliant. You lie. This is nothing but an ego battle.
I truly wonder at your assumption that your users are stupid and underserving of your respect. It still may surprise you to know that people get mightily offended by your dictatorial attitude, even for a pond sized american company.
I also wonder why you still have people like Joe and Soft employed, when you know as well as I do that their own personal failings caused the ‘breaches’ that you now choose to pin on Emerald. You know these two sanctioned everything that was done, specially at the rather unique LL/Emerald in world meetings.
Given all this, there is one thing I do know about you. I know that you could never understand why a small team of 12 dedicated voluntary devs WOULD NOT vote off the most crucial member of the Emerald Team, just because you said. I do know that you have zero understanding of what a team really is, so I will enlighten you.
A team is a group who work with each other on good days and bad. A team will bounce ideas around, acknowledge the brilliance of its members in their own abilities, support each other in times of crisis, defend its members to the hilt when attacked by outsiders and enjoy the cameraderie that blossoms. A team will always have the back of each of its members, so that any outside bullying will be deflected that more strongly.
Once upon a time, I had great hopes and aspirations for what Secondlife could be as it grew and developed. I saw it as an incredibly creative means of communication which if guided right, could far outstrip the many other social networks cropping up. I saw that it could be a perfect method of a remote working environment, allowing companies to flourish around the world with this much lower overhead. I saw it as an amazing way to continue education, with in world facilities for me personally to choose wherever I wanted to have extended education. I also saw it as this wonderful place where people from all over the world could gather together and form lasting bonds with others they would have never met otherwise.
Now, this is what I see. I see a Secondlife future of a backwater virtual environment operated by scrabbling inward-looking managers, governed by mediocre directors who have used age old methods of undermining, backstabbing and incompetence to get where they are. I see an ever-shrinking group of managers scared silly of true intelligence, more interested in chopping it out of their world of blandness and deceit, than fostering, funding and nurturing. I hear your managers screech to me “Yes, lindenlab wants your numbers!” and then deliver an ultimatum we as a team would not fulfill. Because there was only one requirement that was not fulfilled, and you as a bully wanted your ego to reign supreme. But hey, employ yet another PR person to cover up your shambles style management. Sure beats having honest, dedicated and talented staff like those you sacked a few months back. I see now, a puddle rapidly filling with pond scum. Who knows, they may evolve one day. At least you can manipulate them until then though.
So – numbers of users logging in with the official viewer had fallen dramatically , so a VP came up with a plan (or perhaps an ex CEO dragged back) – “let’s block Emerald, add a few really dodgy TPVs and people will have little choice. They will HAVE to use 2.0″. Someone probably got a bonus for this (a LL bonus is worth about $US3.00), or more likely ‘luv’ from the luv machine.
To be perfectly honest with you, lately I’ve been more interested with my own RL tragedies and RL earthquake to take anything that you say or do with any seriousness, let alone give it any credibility. As I write this I look around my city and see smashed buildings, small family businesses devastated, billions of dollars damage to a city of good people. I am watching my next door neighbor’s 80 year old house being pulled down after sustaining too much damage last Saturday night. I’m so glad I live on the other side of the planet to you, Lindenlab. Less chance of me being contaminated and corrupted by your dodgy business practices. How about that VAT scam eh?
At last week’s meeting with Oz when he threatened all the team with ‘never being employed by a real company or a government agency’ I knew you had lost the plot entirely. Who the hell do you think you are, you dunderheaded buffoons? You might not realise this, but the world and its governments are not dictated to by the likes of you. Not everything is virtual scamming and bullying you know. Poor little Oz, how awful to be a puppet. I guess this is why he couldn’t even keep his promise to us to email the final lindenlab decision, as it would be the ethical the thing to do (he said). I imagine it is easier to thrust a blade into the back of your perceived enemy without any notice huh.
To the users of Emerald Viewer, I am truly sorry that lindenlab has chosen to do this to you. Good luck! I will not be using any of the new TPV announced today – I guess I know too much of their history, I’d rather my accounts were safe :). And at least my integrity is intact.
Yours sincerely,

This is unfortunate and upsetting, i have been using emerald and only emerald for my main and alt accounts. You have made the best viewer out there.. now my only suggestion and i do hope you guys are up for it.. create a whole new secondlife.. you guys can do it!!!! maybe name it something other then secondlife. As soon as you do create it I hope i can play along side your world.
Secondlife sadly is going to lose alot of their customers. I do wish the whole team the best of luck, my prayers, thoughts and postive energy is sent to you and your wonderful team in hopes that one day, you will be able to create your own secondlife for millions of players.

*sighs and rolls her eyes* I see the 12 year old boys are back on mommy and daddy’s computer. not only has to drop the F-bomb in a personal manner, but has to do it in caps in case anybody missed his new word that he can type all by himself.
Riku, go tell your mommy she wants you. and remind her that she is the only one who does.

Arabella, very well said, and my thoughts are with you and yours during this RL crisis. And so many times upper managment of corporations forget where they came from and whom helped get them there. It is extremely sad that LL and Emerald could not work out something. Your viewer will be missed but your hard work will never be forgotten.

I gotta give LL credit – if they’re trying to lose logins, this is a damn good way to do it. The whole “us, or these shady guys over here… they look trustworthy, right?” thing… they’re trying to take over EVERYTHING. I thought taking over (and subsequently running into the ground) Slex was bad… this… just about gives me a reason to say “fuck this, and fuck you” to SL. =/
Since this is the Emerald blog, and LL can’t censor it for shit, unlike their own blog, if anyone knows any trustworthy TPVs, please post?
@Katetlin core – LL needs restructuring… with a 2×4.

This is exactly the defining moment in one’s Second Life to just say the hell with it all. I know Arabella and the ones here still with Emerald are credible! A ship’s captain who stays till the very last tells it all. Linden Labs will change now into a mediocre place with Phillip ready to leave I think. Arabella you have done very well. Thank you Emerald for everything.

I am disgusted at secondlife’s treatment of loyal users in the game. I relish the day that someone creates another game that will blow secondlife out of the water, and take all of SL’s users with it. I had been a part of secondlife since the first beta, 2002. I had witnessed and experienced firsthand the exploitation, corruption, and scheming which has progressively gotten worse over the years. It never fails, when someone gets a good idea, decides to run with it, and is successful with it, secondlife intervenes… and says, “It’s my way, or the higway”. It is unfortunate, but a sad truth.

When did the residents of SL loose ther freedom of choice in virwers? This is a real slap in the face for those of us that have spent thousands of lindens buying things only to have to give it up. The SL viewer 2 in simple english Sucks, it is not user friendly and uses 1/3 of the screne for the stupid side tabs,,,this is a very sad day but I will find another game to play and spend my money there.

the way I see it, this won’t last. If half of the population gets on Emerald, then a lot of those people are going to either protest or not get back on at all. And when that happens, LL will fail, nothing will last and all this shit will hit the fan VERY soon. And if our community DOES care enough, all of us will do something about this. I really don’t think this will last long. Somethings going to happen, and believe me, it won’t be pretty.

We recent switchers to Emerald, trying to escape the beyond annoying and unusable Viewer 2, then discovering not only usability and ease, but also all the clever bells and whistles, are not fooled by LL’s stated reasons for the ban. Now will all the Emerald users flood LL with demands for a viewer of the same quality and variety, and not accept “we can’t” and “we might,” in response?

They didn’t listened… They made it… a bullshit…
Unlike Emerald, who listened to what people need…
We’re grateful to yu, Emerald Team…
Yu may have done some mistakes, but at least, yu did the best viewer ever, and gave us the best of SL…
Maybe… we will see yu on an other viewer name… ;)

Man… I don’t even know what to say… My second life experience was enriched by the Emerald Viewer… I have only played SL since about the end of 2009… So, I am a relative babe in SL terms…
My good friend in SL urged me to try Emerald around January, I believe. Soon after, I spread the word to all my ” newbie ” friends… ” YOU gotta try this viewer.. It has everything WE ever wanted and then some! ”
The some time passed… and LL came out with v2… I tried and it unbaked me.. lol… I took a snapshop if anyone would ever want to see.. :) … it was horrid.. it seemed ” shiny ” BUT all these poorly placed and “organized” tabs.. even chatting was shoddy… I played it for exactly 3 hours.. and hated every minute of it… The next time that I logged onto my trusty friend ” EMERALD ” I had stupid folders that I couldn’t delete from v2…. Everything has went down hill from there.. where LL is concerned … at least, in my personal experience.. I loved Emerald.. because you guys made Emerald for us… Not for yourselves only… but you thought about “US” the rest of the USERS in SL… what we might want.. You tried.. but.. from all the post I have read all over and considered…. LL has become jealous… Simple put.. Emerald you brought us joy. You added things we didn’t ask for or need that made this viewer better…
LL adds what they want and could care less about me…
The feel I am just a number…
Well… I will log as much as I can with Emerald after I finish typing this reply… but I will claw, bite, search in the rubble that is becoming our SL LL’s shaped community.. before I go to v2..
VIEWER TWO WAS NOT MADE FOR ME…. DO YOU HEAR ME LINDEN LABS!!
YOU NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT ME WHEN YOU MADE IT…
And trying to force me to use it… heh that isn’t going to make me run into your arms for safety.. If anything YOU made yourself untrustworthy in my eyes… and i am not the only one…
Peace to You and the REST of the DEV TEAM

Emerald seems pretty dead, and with it, the future of the SecondLife Platform seems in question. If even a quarter of Emerald’s users share the views already expressed in comments, SL has just lost 12.5% of it’s userbase and revenue, real or potential. Coupled with the loss of trust, and potential legal action should one of the “Trusted” viewers turn out to be malicious (remember, the Linden Dollar is considered Legal Tender now…)
With SL possibly spiraling the bowl, Miss Steadham, have you, or would you, consider, perhaps, a third party grid, to go with your now defunct third party viewer?
Maybe the Emerald Viewer for SecondLife is dead, but perhaps, with the Emerald code, existing resources on the web for server systems, a small business loan for a physics engine and a few other things, and the devs that may be drawn by the potential of a salary via the small business loan, the Emerald project could be reborn as the “Emerald Life” Virtual World, with all of the capabilities of SecondLife, but all the freedoms they’ve recently been taking away.
With the massive userbase of Emerald in SL, the unhappiness of SL users at the current state of things there, and the outrage at what LL have been doing, the time could be right for a competitor to play on the Emerald loyalty still present, and challenge SL’s place on top. It was really inevitable, but I can think of no better placed name or group to step up to the plate than Emerald, right now.
In any case, good luck, and I hope to see you guys again, hopefully in the credits for a product I use, be that an SL viewer, or a promising new Virtual World.

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking lately about this issue with Emerald Viewer and Linden Labs. We all hear gossip and some of that gossip comes from distinguished and respectable long term residents of Second Life. I personally have invested a lot monetarily and a lengthier stay than perhaps I should have. I have begun to downgrade my account, sold my property for a ridiculous price; all in preparation to no longer finance what certainly appears to me to be a destructive cliche. Linden Lab should be ashamed of itself for suppression of truth and most of all; a body of work designed by all creators.

I have but one question…
How is LL’s client open source, when they clearly ban people who make a better viewer using that OPEN SOURCE code. Looks like they just have it Open Source to make themselves look good.
I know full well about their corruption. I had my first account, which I spent alot of time on, banned for no reason at all I hadn’t ever broken any of their terms. This was between 3 to 4 years ago and I still don’t know today why it was banned.

I have played SL since 8/9/2006 and have slowly seen how LL has changed from an absoutly dynamic team into a small group of children. They no longer act like there running a gaming company for everyone but who would rather try to act like dictators ruling over there small kingdom with no care to what the masses want. Its not very often that somthing new comes along in SL that chatches my eye and makes me go, WOW, thies guys seriously have there act togeather, Then I found emerald. Not only did it run smoothly and was set up wonderfully but it also had tons of other bells and whistles that simply made SL BETTER! And guess what? Roughly 97% of it WORKED and wasnt buggy on the first pass, unlike SL who throws things onto the grid that is broke for weeks to YEARS after its released… To the DEV team of Emerald I half to say hands down that that you all seriously impressed me and made SL even more enjoyable. Hopefully one day LL actually gets a staff that is adults and can properly run a company, then again pigs will probally fly first.

It failed hopefully they listened with windows 7 maybe that will happen here but yes I will login on Emerald till I can’t anymore. It’s not like LL even closing Emerald down as someone said above for any reasons that make sence it’s not like there goign to incorprate emerald into there own viewer or anything. AKA if Emerald is better then version 2 you think that tell ll something? after all Emerald is working on there own time and free ll has resorces and actually pay there developers/programers. doing better with nothing > Doing Crap with everything

I have been a member of secondlife since before the days of flexi prims back in 2005. Together with my friend Opius Oddfellow, we create all kinds of avatars and objects. as well as music videos and machinima, under the name Peach Fuzz. We have created content everywhere from adult to general audience. I just wanted to leave a thank you, from us at Peach Fuzz.
Your team has made it easy for us as artists to build and work. I have never seen a more user friendly client.
I am so sorry for this sillyness. It reminds me of the events between Activision and Infinity Wars. and between Microsoft and Bungie. This is no different.
I wish you well, and again, Thank you, all of you, for giving us the emerald experience.

well i truly will miss emerald as i have been a user of it for sometime and now i dont know which viewer is gonna work best for me.I think we need to boycot LL somehow.I know their crooks because they have robbed me of 495 usd in 1 month for a 1/2 sim tier and we have been fighting them about this to no avail.I really think a boycott or a petition should get started and maybe a few boycott groups in-world should be started.I also know that the crooks do not care of the users that come to secondlife on a daily bases and spend hundreds of dollrs every year.e i for one will stop using sl.i have already started the downgrade of my premium membership. As for all you emerald users plz let me know of a good viewer that wont steal anything from me like linden labs as already done. You can contact me in world by searching kramer Snookums or emailing me at kramersnookums@gmail.com.I do wish everybody on the emerald team the best of luck and hopfully we will hear from you again soon.Peace

I will keep my Emerald until the bitter end. All I can say is there is no way in hell after using Emerald I’d ever use a LL viewer, we all know, they suck. So even though this is the end for Emerald, LL still doesn’t win…I refuse to use their viewers. So who’s next on LL’s list? What other group do they plan to intimedate next? No matter, I’ll still never use thier viewer lol.

All I can say here is this, I will never, and I mean NEVER switch to Viewer 2 by LL. So all I can do now is try some other alternatives for Emerald like Imprudence, it seems to work fine, but doesn’t even come close to Emerald. If LL will bann others viewers in the future, which I think is their main goal, I wil stop playing SL, and that is final. And let me tell You, even though I’m just one resident, if more residents like me will do the same thing, LL will have no other choise then to let Emerald get back on the grid again, and I’dd like to repeat the saying that we have seen lately……United we stand, Devided we fall.
Ronny said this on September 7, 2010 at 9:55 pm |
Ok what to say first. I have no idea where to begin. So lets start here..
I read this post & I read the one from Second Life’s site. The only thing I could see they are still throwing up reasons are because of still in violation and not completing in allocated time.
My response: You call a short term deadline enough allocated time? Didn’t Emerald come out with 2600 which DID conform to the policy and has fixed majority of problems. Still in fact regardless of LL two-face thoughts, they still wanted to quickly do away with Emeralds power over 3rd party viewers and their own clients.
They had the perfect fast setting once one little thing went wrong. If it wasn’t for a blog post here mentioning a problem, there would still be no problem coming from LL or Emeralds dismay. It shows thats LL own security and policy wasn’t still being fully enforced or THEY would of seen something wrong. Don’t they look at source code – hmm – no.
I think this blog post was cleverly written. It gave valuable information about LL relationship with them and other concerns. Emeralds being banned for the reasons LL posted and to those reasons I refuse forever to agree – Sorry LL but my personal policy in agreements revoked yours. The Emerald team were working hard to come out with an update to comply with the policy but LL’s ridiculous “time-frame” was unacceptable – Therefor became unacceptable to the devs here along with other non-written policy requests. If it IS NOT WRITTEN – no one has to comply to your requests period. Getting rid of devs that doesn’t state in the policy that you have the right to, does not transfer to the open source client community. And if written now — would justify as trying to say you can’t do this. Then you have no right to state and do away with Emerald. Like a contract – if it aint written – you can’t state otherwise period.
Emerald has to be the most respected and very active tech, user and community base for SL compared to LL and other clients – thus far. They had no choice but to end for the guidelines set forth from LL which couldn’t be met in an acceptable forced agreement. Even though that was part of the reasons.
Does LL truly agree that all clients included the 1636 as non-compliant or just the recent beta releases? If it’s just ONLY the beta releases, then do away with logins to those revisions only until Emerald sets forth to update to a full compliant beta release. ( which they were working on). I see no acceptable excuse for LL excluding Emerald from the TPVD.
/Still factual LL’s partial requirements were NOT listed in policy. Which Emerald could voided requests./

Arabella, You and the Emerald Team have my my experience on SL for the last 3 years. Period. LL and Emerald are the two mothers fighting over the same baby. Yet when the ruler says Be not divided, but divide the child evenly, Emerald loves its “Baby”(us and its team) too much to see it cut in half. LL on the other hand is the mother screaming “YEAH CUT THE LITTLE F*&%#$ IN TWO!!!” Its sad. On a brighter note… WANNA KNOW WHERE A NEWER BETTER SEXIER VERSION OF SECOND LIFE IS?!?!? Go Join BLUEMARS! Its JUST like SL was in the very ground stages. I’ve been in it since beta and its going to BLOW SL away. http://www.bluemars.com Been in it since beta and…holy cow. - hates its existing customers deeply
- therefore dreams of another kind of customer from large enterprises, kind of Business- 3D- Disneyland, everything PG
- gives a shit for what their existing customers want or need
I wonder how long this will work. But while so many BDSM lovers are inworld, with a strong will to be humilated and intimidated, I’m afraid it will last long…. ^^

I know my words will have no impact on the greater scheme of things but I’d like to say thanks emerald for creating a viewer I knew when I clicked the icon it’d work and I could do what I needed to do inworld whether it was building or admin work on my sim.Nobody will ever know everything that brought this about because truth is in the eye of the person telling the story. All I know is that non of this would’ve been a big deal if LL had concentrated on building a viewer the users liked instead of looking to shine on noobs with bling. The features emerald had in it that the LL version didn’t were things that were useful and needed. Things like right click to copy paste, something a first year programmer can do, was way beyond the capabilities of Linden Labs.So in closing I’d like to say thanks emerald for a chance to drive a ferrari and thanks to big brother it’s time to drag the econo box with the fuzzy dice on the mirror out until someone comes around and carries on what the emerald team did the best at

Dear Emerald community,
I just came back from a two weeks vacation and saw what has happened to the Emerald viewer. The viewer that never failed me, the viewer with so many features that made life of a builder, a scriber, a SIM owner and person of some not English native language so much easier in SL.
To the builder it’s a lot of “little” things, like to ability to copy and paste coordinates of an object in one or two clicks, to the scriber it’s the implementation of Alphons van der Heijden’s LSL-Editor, to the SIM owner it’s the perfect radar, and to the non-English person it’s the spell checker. The inventory search is also so much faster if you know the type you are searching for. I’m sure all of you too have some favorites, some of which I maybe didn’t get the time to investigate.
Now it seems all of this is lost, to be replaced by the “Version 2” that to the best of my knowledge has none of these features, but instead a rather cumbersome user interface.
I do not understand the problem, but if there is some malicious code in the Emerald Viewer I trust the Emerald team would have been happy to correct/remove it, had LL approached them in a more friendly way.
But that seems to be history, and the issue now is what the huge Emerald community may do now. I trust it’s correct that over 50% of the logins were now using the Emerald viewer.
Should we act in the same horrid way as LL has done, or should we, the Emerald community, not just the team, offer to negotiate again?
Our strength would be our number, and thereby our economical abilities to make an efficient boycott.
Our weakness would be that we might need to give up our SIMs should the boycott need to be a long one, else our economical strength as LL customers would not be a real threat to the LL.
Please send me an email to georg_galster@pc.dk if you are for such a boycott. If I get enough support I’ll try to approach the LL to see what I might do.
Sincerely
Georg Galster, also known as OldBuilder Larsson

Well, Arabella
I have friends in Christchurch and Dunedin, and I am thankful that they are unharmed, as I assume you are.
As to Emerald’s demise, I doubt if many folk who have thought about SL at all are surprised at what has come to pass. My brief experince of Emerald was entirely good, but I do not believe that any reasonable person can be surprised at what happened after Frac/Phox/Skills…ohh.. whoever, did what they did.
It is a pity, Emerald rewrote the book of SL for many folk.
Farewell, Arabella, I hope NZ will be OK.

This is terribly sad indeed. My thoughts and prayers goes to you Arabella and your town.
As for LL, i guess they just fully admitted to one fact:
Emerald Viewer was by far the best viewer, much better than thier Viewer 2.0. I hope they will eventually realise this is the kind of mistake not to make
Thanks for having made us experience Emerald.

This war is not finished, only a battle lose!
** Whatever you decide is good for me but I love this ship! **
( If you need any kind of help email works. )

So basically LL doesn’t give a fuck about US SL users, never mind that it’s US that keep them in business, all this is about LL being jealous because Em makers wouldn’t bow down and kiss LL’s ass?! SL is really gonna suck now, and as far as I’m concerned LL couldn’t PAY me to use there shity ass viewer! Emerald is, and will FOREVER BE THE BEST VIEWER!

I am sorry that Emerald is going away. I am sorry that the awesome creators of Emerald have parted ways. Sometimes it makes me wonder if someone sabotaged this that is not Linden Labs because it just seems so external this issue. I love Emerald and will continue to log into it until I cannot.

I could leave so many comments based in the feelings I have for this post. TY for your feelings , I know they are heart felt. Note: I do not use emerald or odd viewers. Im in SL for what SL can give me . apparently less now days. as hence my land holdings is in half, so is my spend.

Hi Hi…
I concur with your assessment that Linden Labs is experiencing what is referred to euphemistically as ‘management problems.’ My best guess is that a post-start up, business-oriented management coalition is attempting to silence competent criticism both internal (by summary firings) and external (by discrediting third party viewers).
Now, bear in mind that Second Life is a property. Linden Labs is a privately held company that owns that property. The company managers can set up any terms of access whatsoever.
The fundamental problem is that Linden Labs does not have viable competition within the virtual world arena defined by free-form, interactive, transferable, user-created content. This singularity of existence has also created a secondary problem in which regulating authorities world-wide are able to enact rule sets which need only be enforced against a one primary corporate entity.
The solution to both problems lies in diversity. I respectfully suggest that people channel their annoyance with Linden Labs away from complaint articulation and into the use and development of the open simulator platform.
Apropos of that course of action, I will report that I have been migrating a large scale, interactive exhibition from Second Life into a private grid based on the open simulator software. This exhibition is a script intensive project. I have had ZERO problems with the open simulator scripting engines. Open simulator regions are now viable environments for both building and scripting.

:) Well said. There are other worlds that will allow use of Emerald, I’m headed out there already. I have found SL a sickening, shallow little world and it’s no loss to anyone. I stay in sl only for my very worthwhile job there. Otherwise, I left SL a good six months back. The latest round of so called improvements and tyrannical bullying has finished me off. I have two premium ac’s with Linden, they will not be renewed. I’ve already sold off all land interests and will abandon the final 1024 asap. My cash goes to better folk, Linden can go drown in their own egos and watch the comeptition snap up the escapees.

So many people was talking about leave Sl if emerald will be blocked and today was that day. The official numbers was 50% of user use emerald… I was thinking maybe a loss of 10% because of the private data, loss of 10% because of the slower new version, loss of 10% for people that just changed because of tired of the fight LLEmerald so today i was expecting a difference of at least 10% of the people online but it’s not the case. Are all user of Emerald business people that have business that they can’t just leave or are all hypocrits??
I for my side i was trying different versions of emerald and try to login anyway…I didn’t have success and I’m hoping that soon will happear a patch or a mod of emerald so that i can login anyway even if it’s with the “bad” version.
I’m lucky that i never invested real money in sl in the last 3-4 years and will continue to use alternative viewers like i have always done. Saddly Emerald is the second viewer to let me down (the first being Gemini) even if for different things.
Anyway …long story short…compliments and thanks to all emerald team (even fractured crystal … we all are human and make mistakes) for the good viewer. Hope to see Emerald 2.0 (or what else name u will give him) in the future. If not the case, I’m already trying some alternatives to SL and don’t really want to be a part of this life because it’s just not fun anymore.
I always was trying to convince people about how beautiful and colorfull sl was and try to show to everybody that sl is a world for people of all ages (being not so young anymore many people say that I’m childish to play “video games”). I can’t/want do this anymore not just because of emerald but for all the bad changes sl passed since i entered this fantastic world.
Arabella, I’m sad with u too about your (and all the peole around there) rl and hope u (and them) are well and fell sad about the blocked account. I was almost expecting it because if LL has gone as far as they have done with Emerald, block your (and all Emerald team) account, is just a small step for them. Maybe today u win something and not lost: u don’t have to deal with LL anymore, they cutted the line.

Hello everyone, i have watched from the back as many others have. I am struggling to fins a replacement and won’t use a viewer based on emerald code while emerald itself is banned. A boycott won’t work cos not enough people will join in. Yes I know we all raise up our hands and scream at LL, but really of the people who comented here only a handfull actually said they are leaving. So seriously show your support with a very simple and effective planned log off every day. Such as at 8pm SLT every night all emerald users log off for 15 mins. Keep doing that for a week. Then make the log off one hour. so on and so on. Don’t stop until Emerald AND Arabella’s accounts are restored. Lets organise it properly and as user not affiliated with emerald or modular systems, lets do it away from this site.

OK, seriously, can someone please tell me if there is any group (publically or privately) who intends to try and make a version of Emerald that identifies itself as something else?.. Cause I really don’t want to use 2.0 and I don’t like any of the other viewers. x_x
I don’t get why software which was perfectly fine to use in SL just a few weeks ago, is now suddenly too dangerous to log into SL with. Riddle me that LL?
Aussiedude said this on September 9, 2010 at 12:20 am |
Because no one wanted to use the horrible interface of 2.0. 2.0 is just a desentization tactic to get everyone used to SL becoming worse. Emerald didn’t fit into that plan (150,000 users of Emerald). A little propaganda later, and Emerald is taken out of the picture.

Incredible… I love Emerald for all that it does so much better. I’ve been a resident for over 5 years and seen a lot of crap from LL. This really tops the cake. So I tried their ver 2 viewer last night. It is the only one that is prominent on their download page. I have a fairly powerful machine running SL. Guess what…within 45 minutes it blue-screened Windows 7 64-bit ! OMG, I can not believe it. Have you ever seen anything blue screen Win 7? Emerald rarely ever crashes for any reason. I’m concerned that LL will destroy my OS with their crap kludge software. I found an earlier version lower on that page. I guess I’ll have to use that for awhile until Emerald comes back up… if it does.
Emerald Team, are you planning to continue with the SL grid?
Thanx for a great viewer.

hey guys, firstly ..omfg! i feel like abit of a tard i didnt even know all this was going on til i tried to log in and was like wtf find out all this and am gobsmacked! i been on sl for almost 5 years and like many if not all the people on here i think emerald was the best veiwer for sl ever made!! it wasnt broken, it ran well, my particular fav was the extra attachments among many things, i would like to say im suprised at LLs DISGUSTING and utterly unprofessional attitude but after seeing my bf of years who i met on sl after seeing his land and moneyexchange buisness destroyed im not suprised by this tho i had hoped for better. Arabella THANKYOU to you and your teams many efforts, you guys made my sl experience soooooo much cooler, all my friends and me used emerald since it came out and it made alot of the crap LL did seem that much more bearable, i never ONCE had a problem with emerald. i tried 2.0 a while ago and i utterly couldnt stand it,it was all fluff and no substance and after 5 years on sl im seriously thinking of giving it up, i prolly will as this jus TOTALLLY smacks of big brother and ive read 1984 and the similaries are scary. Again thankyou guys soo much and im really sorry your hard efforts have been rewarded this way, its aweful and if you guys ever made your own virtual world il be soo there as i KNOW from experience you guys run honestly and therefore i could trust it which is somthing i lost with LL YEARS ago. Also wishing you guys the best in NZ i have family there and my thoughts are with you guys XD p.s when you do your own thing email us! <3

It is important to recognize here that what has been accomplished by The Emerald Viewer and the Emerald Viewer Development Team is a success that is far more valuable and remarkable than that achieved by Anshe Chung! Good Luck to you Arabella. May you move on to greater success! The superior quality of your mind is clearly shown by the success of the Emerald Viewer and your integrity is unquestionable! May God Bless You! I can only think that the burden and stranglehold of Second Life had to be removed from you so that your capacities could be used in helping others elsewhere. As far as the stupid remark by Oz about “real company or government agency”; c’mon who are these idiots kidding?
ll Torii said this on September 9, 2010 at 3:24 pm |
Its too bad really! I had all my students trained up useing Emerald as it was unique and suited our purposes as the other viewers just pissed them off! Now Im faced with coming up with a new lesson plan that incorporates some other viewer and have to train about 800 students on how to use a new viewer the way we need them too. After a few years of investing well over $10,000 into LL I think it might be easieer to try a whole different Virtual Experience as LL has cost us time and money as current projects and operation came to a screeching halt when Emerald was switched off.
DojoLowtide said this on September 9, 2010 at 6:25 pm |
LL has finally axed its own foot. They had it coming for a while with their totally unprofessional and callous attitude towards users banning Emerald is the proverbial last straw. This proves that LL is completely unreliable and it would be best for serious users to consider another grid. Arabella, maybe you can get a group together that can create “Emerald Life” as THE alternative to SL. I have been on SL for 4 years and had a bunch of close friends who are going to be lost to this stupidity from LL, which only makes me very determined never to use SL again whether or not they allow Emerald again.
rb said this on September 10, 2010 at 11:08 am |
I agree with all of the above. I just found Emerald Viewer and love it. I have been using RLV and now I cant access it because I don’t know how to do it on the SL Viewer:-( It was so easy and so nice to use Emerald view why the hell didn’t you leave well enough alone LL.

Dear Emerald, thanks for the info on utherverse. As you mentioned this is just one of several virtual worlds and Iit would be nice if Emerald viewer was able to connect to every virtual world out there.
Before this carry on started I used to be able to use Emerald to connect to the OSGrid and It worked pretty well however now LL has blocked Emerald it can no longer. Save me from Hippo Client and make Emerald compatible with OS Grid.

As I see it, There are plenty of Laws that Linden Labs are breaking. The same way Intel Treated AMD and the same arm twisting Microsoft Did with there software. Anti trust laws are there for a reason, for strong arm tactics that are used in this manner.

That was the last straw for me. Fir the over saturated economy in SL, the dubious business practices of LL(I used to work for dreamland), on and on ad nauseum, and now I am struggling to log on and stay on with these other rinky -dink viewers. SO, I went to InWolrdz, using the new Emerald Viewer and am very happy again in a virtual world. Thank you Emerald for a great viewer, for your hard work and dedication. My thoughts and prayers are with you, Arabella, and others there, as you recover from that disaster in RL, as well.

I hate that Linden Lab has done this. And banning half of the staff? instead of working with you guys? you guys created clothing protection months before Linden Labs ever “decided” to put that in their viewers. They only care about thsemelves and its no wonder they are now getting finacially strapped i honestly hope Microsoft buys them out because i doubt they would allow such crap to go on. They might even bring you guys back to work for them who knows? Whatever
i use neillife now and i suggest you and anyone else who has been PC banned to do the same. (the cracked version ) there are ways to hide your ip too. id say instead of helping them out go back and cause as much bullshit as you can!
screw Linden Labs!
i hope they and second life goes down the drain to be honest.

This act, Of seeming scared or concerned or even devoted to a team and a community… Well, I’m sorry Jessica but your act was nothing but a bullshit attempt to prove to linden lab’s you care so much for them. While i write this I am playing the world’s smallest for you. And maybe you and Joe can meet up somewhere in world and have a beautiful sex scene. Oh wait, you already are. You are a liar Jessica. You, are corrupted by this ponzy scheme Linden Lab has going on here. I am going to devote my time making sure you don’t hurt your users. I will be there when you don’t think i am.
